X-Women win 3rd straight McEwen Cup

Oct 7, 2007 - The StFX X-Women won their third consecutive McEwen Cup Saturday afternoon in rugby action played at Oland Stadium in Antigonish, NS after defeating the McGill Martlets 26-7. The McEwen Cup is an exhibition rugby game played annually between the X-Women and Martlets and was started in 2004 by McGill to honor and thank the McEwen family of Montreal who generously donated land for McGill Athletics playing fields. The Martlets won the inagural Cup in 2004, while the X-Women were victorious in 2005 and 2006. Each team rotates hosting duties for the annual game.\r\n\r\nIn Saturday's 26-7 win, the Martlets opened the scoring with Maria Joworski scoring a try and Melany Waring making good on the two point convert. Last year's CIS Rookie of the Year and all-Canadian Ghislaine Landry scored a try for the X-Women then Mary Giles scored another for StFX as the scrum pushed over the endline. Courtnay Malcolm scored on the following convert. The X-Women held a 12-7 lead at half-time and Landry added two more tries for X in the second half and Courtnay Malcolm made good on the converts to round out the scoring.\r\n\r\nThe X-Women currently hold a 5-0 record atop the AUS conference and will host the Acadia Axewomen (1-4) Saturday afternoon. The 3-1 Martlets are currently in third place in the QSSF and will host Concordia (4-1) Thursday night.
