Xhibition wins

Sep 3, 2007 - The StFX men‰Ûªs and women‰Ûªs soccer teams and women‰Ûªs rugby team all opened their exhibition seasons on winning notes. On Thursday afternoon, the X-Men soccer team traveled to Halifax for an afternoon exhibition match against the Dalhousie Tigers and came home with a 2-1 win. The Tigers opened the scoring in the 23rd minute on a goal by Talal Al-Awail. Michal Marousek replied for the X-Men at the 59th minute and the winning goal was scored late in the game by Mira Novak at the 89 minute mark. The soccer X-Men also played a Sunday afternoon exhibition game at home against the UPEI Panthers with the game ending in a 1-1 draw. Paul Craig scored the goal for th4e Panthers while Mwenya Mwansa replied for the X-Men. Head coach Lou Bilek will have his final team selected by mid-week and prior to the Sept. 7 regular season opener at 5:00 pm versus the Cape Breton Capers at StFX Oland Stadium.\r\n\r\nThe X-Women soccer team, under the direction of head coach Trevor Reddick, played a lone pre-season exhibition game on Saturday afternoon at home against the Saint Mary‰Ûªs Huskies and ended up with a 1-0 win. The lone goal was scored early in the game in the first half and was actually deflected off a Husky player. The soccer X-Women will also open their regular season on Friday, Sept. 7 when they host the Cape Breton Capers at home at 3pm.\r\n\r\nThe defending CIS champion X-Women rugby team have lost several players from last year‰Ûªs championship team but none the less put up a big score in their Saturday afternoon exhibition game against the Ottawa Gee Gee‰Ûªs, winning 57-5. Kim Armstrong, Amanda Bedard, Ghislaine Landry and Megan Pritchard all scored two tries a piece for the blue and white while Jill MacLaren and Alex Meeker also scored tries. Courtney Malcolm scored a penalty kick and one convert while Landry also added a convert to round out the scoring attack.\r\n\r\nhe X-Women hosted the Saint Mary‰Ûªs Huskies in an exhibition game Monday night at Oland Stadium and posted a convincing 59-8 victory. Courtney Malcolm scored 15 points for the blue and white (1 try and 5 converts) while eight other X-Women recorded tries including Mary Giles, Megan Pritchard, Brittany Conrad, Amanda Bedard, Ghislaine Landry, Katie Archibald, Christin Hanson and Alex Meeker. Amanda Campbell and Megan Pritchard each recorded a convert. The X-Women open their AUS regular season play on the road this weekend as they travel to Acadia on Sunday afternoon for a game against the Axewomen.
