X-Women wrap up regular season with close 1-0 loss to Tommies

Fredericton, NB – A second period power play goal by Ekaterina Pelowich was all that was needed Sunday evening as the St. Thomas Tommies defeated the STFX X-Women 1-0 in the final game of the AUS regular season.
The Tommies goal came at 12:52 of the second period as Pelowich connected with Trinity Webber and Laura Brown while on the power play.
The Tommies outshot the X-Women 12-9 in the opening period though neither team could find the scoreboard. Shots were even in the second as the home team had the 1-0 lead.
The X-Women did all they could in the third period, throwing 17 shots on the Tommies goal but Katie Sweeney came up with some key stops to earn her team the win. Sweeney also garnered player of the game honours for her squad.
X-Women defense Mackenzie Lothian was the player of the game for the X-Women. Brooklyn Oakes had 26 saves in the X net in the losing effort.
STFX closes out the season with an 18-5-1-4 record and 40 points in second place, three points back of UNB (21-5-1-1). Both teams have earned a first round playoff bye and will advance directly to the semifinal round.
STFX will host Games 1 and 2 of the AUS best-of-five semifinal series on February 28th and March 1st. Game times are 7:00 pm on both nights and tickets are now on sale at the Keating Centre box office or online by CLICKING HERE.
The third place Tommies will play the sixth place Saint Mary's Huskies in one AUS quarterfinal series. The fourth place Moncton Aigles Bleues will take on the fifth place Dalhousie Tigers in the other quarterfinal series.
