X-Women shut down Aigles Bleues 3-1 to close out first half
U SPORTS No. 8 ranked STFX X-Women make it six wins in a row with a 3-1 victory over the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues
Antigonish, NS – The U SPORTS No. 8 ranked STFX X-Women (11-2-3) made it six wins in a row with a 3-1 victory over the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues (9-4-2) Saturday night in AUS action at the STFX Keating Centre.
The first period was a scoreless affair until just over four minutes left when X-Women forward Kalle Hastman found the back of the net. Linemate Ashlyn Garnett intercepted a pass in the Moncton end and fed it down low to Claire Carruthers who redirected to Hastman for her second goal of the season.
The Aigles Bleues outshot the home team X-Women 10-4 in the opening period but trailed 1-0 on the scoreboard.
The teams exchanged second period goals as the X-Women held a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes, outshooting the Aigels Bleues 13-4 in the fast-paced middle frame.
Moncton tied it up with a goal at 12:27 as Amelie Vachon brought the puck up ice and set up Elisabeth Gallipeau in the slot who beat a screened Bianca Zak in the X net.
STFX regained their one-goal lead with just over four minutes to go in the period as Ireland McCloskey dug out a loose puck behind the Moncton net and tucked it in past Aigles Bleues netminder Annick Boudreau.
The Aigles Bleues came out aggressively in the third period looking for the equalizer but Zak and the X-Women held them off.
Moncton went 0-3 on power play chances in the game and were unable to solve Zak in the third period.
Joanna Martinsen rounded out the STFX scoring with an empty goal with eight seconds left in the game.
McCloskey was named first star and player of the game for her game-winning tally. Zak was the second star and Moncton defense Marie-Soleil Simard was the third star.
Tonight's game marked the final regular season game for both teams in the first term. AUS action resumes on Wednesday, January 8th when the X-Women will travel to Halifax to play Saint Mary's and the Aigles Bleues will be in Fredericton to take on UNB. Both games are at 7:00 pm.
