Moncton, NB - Player of the game Bree MacPherson saw an opening in front of the opposing net with her team in control of the puck and scored the game-winning goal as the STFX X-Women defeated the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues 3-2 on Saturday in an Atlantic University Sport women's hockey game at the J.-Louis-Lévesque arena Saturday night.
The Aigles Bleues took a 2-0 lead in the first two minutes of play with two goals from Erica Plourde. Plourde was all over the ice and scored her goals 53 seconds apart early in the period.
The visitors were finally able to get the puck past goaltender Annick Boudreau at 11:23 of the second period when Ireland McCloskey found the back of the net. The X-Women held a 17-3 advantage in shots on goal in that period.
Taking advantage of a 5-on-3 power play, Mackenzie Lothian tied the game at 2-2 at 2:08 of the third off a pass from Ella VandeSompel.
With no other scoring, both teams set up for the five-minute overtime where MacPherson scored 1:43 in.
Bianca Zak made 14 saves (7-3-3-1) for the win. Annick Boudreau was busy in goal for the Aigles Bleues with 41 (9-17-13-2) shots.
It was the second overtime win in as many nights for the X-Women. They next see action on Friday night, November 15th when they visit the UPEI Panthers.
The Aigles Bleues will host Mount Allison and UNB next Friday and Saturday.
