X-Women beat Tommies 4-1 for second win of the weekend
The STFX X-Women made it two wins in as many nights with a 4-1 victory over the St. Thomas Tommies
ANTIGONISH, NS - The STFX X-Women hockey team made it two wins in as many nights with a 4-1 victory over the St. Thomas Tommies on Saturday evening at the Charles V Keating Centre.
It was a fast paced first period, with both teams coming out of the gate with some jump. Third star of the game Kamdyn Switzer (Stittsville, ON) opened the scoring for the X-Women three minutes in, burying a low wrist shot from the slot after taking a pass from Landyn Pitts (Antigonish, NS).
The X-Women went on a four-minute powerplay late in the period, but strong play from St. Thomas goalie Katie Sweeney (Tecumseh, ON) helped keep it a one-goal game early. Shots after 20 minutes were 14-9 in favor of STFX.
The teams kept up the pace in the second period, and STFX made it a two-goal lead with 10 minutes gone, as Switzer notched her second of the game, batting a bouncing puck into the net after a scramble. Pitts picked up her second assist on the powerplay goal, while Tea Pearce (Calgary, AB) had the second assist.
The Tommies went on the powerplay a few minutes later, but the X penalty kill did its job. With seven minutes to go, STFX rookie and second star on the night Claire Carruthers (Crossfield, AB) added to the home team lead, intercepting a St. Thomas pass in the offensive end, and scoring her first goal as an X-Woman.
Kameryn Lahey (Catalone, NS) made it 4-0 three minutes later, scoring short side after another scramble in front of the Tommies' net. Megan Smith (Antigonish, NS) and Joanna Martinsen (Thunder Bay, ON) had the helpers. Shots at the end of the second were 24-19 in favor of STFX.
The Tommies got one back with seven minutes to go in the game, with Nadia Lavoie (St. Isidore, AB) backhanding a shot off a centering pass from Laura Brown (Scarborough, ON). St. Thomas then picked up the pressure, looking for more, but STFX netminder Bianca Zak (Stonewall, MB) kept the door shut.
Zak, who was named first star and Gabriel Pizza Player of the game for her efforts, made 30 saves while earning the win, and Sweeney made 23 for the Tommies.
St. Thomas returns to action next Friday, November 1, when they host Moncton at 7 p.m. The X-Women host the Mount Allison Mounties on Saturday, November 2, at 3 p.m.
