X-Women pick up second win of weekend
The X-Women picked up their second win of the weekend with a 2-0 shutout over St. Thomas
Fredericton, NB - Despite a solid performance from goaltender Katie Sweeney, the STU Tommies fell 2-0 to STFX on Saturday night in AUS action.
The STFX goals came from Ashlyn Garnett in the second period and Mackenzie Lothian in the dying seconds of the game.
STFX dominated the opening period, outshooting the Tommies 13-3, but STU goaltender Katie Sweeney stood tall, making crucial saves and keeping it scoreless through 20 minutes. St. Thomas had two penalties but managed to hold off STFX's powerplay.
In the second period, Ashlyn Garnett broke the deadlock at 15:58, giving STFX a 1-0 lead. Despite continued pressure from STFX, Sweeney remained sharp between the pipes, keeping her team in the game.
In the third period, with only 45 seconds left, Mackenzie Lothian iced the win for STFX with an unassisted goal at 19:15.
STFX outshot STU 37-18. The X-Women were 0 for 5 on the powerplay, while the Tommies were 0 for 3.
Sweeney earned player of the game for the Tommies, posting 35 saves in the Tommies net while Garnett was the STFX player of the game. Brooklyn Oakes picked up the shutour victory for the X-Women with 18 saves.
STFX will next see action on Wednesday, October 9th when they host Dalhousie in a 7:00 pm game in their home opener. The Tommies will look to bounce back in their next matchup on October 11th against UNB.
