These two teams have met twice before at the national tournament with Laurier taking both games by a score of 3-2.

The X-Women opened the scoring in this game with a goal from Suzanne Fenerty of Cole Harbour, N.S. at 10:10 of the first period. The power play goal would give StFX the lead for two minutes before OUA rookie of the year Laura Brooker (Fergus, Ont.) stripped the puck from a defender and scored the equalizer.

In the second frame Brittany Crago (Stouffville, Ont.) scored to give the host team the lead. Molly MacDonald evened the match with 31 seconds left in the period. She beat Laurier netminder Liz Knox (Stouffville,Ont.) over the shoulder after she stopped two previous shots from MacDonald on the ice.

After two, Laurier held a decided advantage in shots 18-9, but the scoring chances between the two teams were relatively even.

Midway through the third, a delay of game penalty gave the X-Women a 5-on-3. On the ensuing power play StFX made good on their opportunity with Catie Gavin (Antigonish, NS) flipping the puck over Knox for the go ahead goal. With 8:36 left in the game Gavin scored again with a shot that hit Liz Knox's glove and flipped into the net.

"When we get pushed we have a tendency to push back as hard as we
can," said StFX head coach David Synishin following the game. "I think our third period was obviously our best. We had a 5-on-3 that obviously helped, and a 5-on-4."

Laurier came back on the power play with a goal at 7:45 from Vanessa Schabkar (Etobicoke, Ont.) to give the purple and gold life late in the match. The marker cut the X-Women's lead to one.

The Hawks pulled Liz Knox for the final minute, but couldn*t find the equalizer.

"It was a tough loss, it was certainly uncharacteristic for us to give up four goals and, so, we've got 24 hours and we have to regroup," said Laurier head coach Rick Osborne.

Laurier will now play Manitoba on Friday, March 11th at 7:30 p.m. while StFX will get the day off and resume play on Saturday, March 12th against Manitoba.
