X-Women open with 6-0 win in hockey playoffs

The X-Women hockey team jump started their way into the AUS championship with a resounding 6-0 victory over the Dalhousie Tigers Thursday afternoon in their opening round robin game.

The AUS second seeded X-Women scored three goals in the opening three and a half minutes of play to establish an early 3-0 lead and they didn’t look back.

\r\n

Freshman forward Daniela Falconio scored on the opening play just 21 seconds into the game as fellow rookie Jessica McCullogh assisted on the play. The X-Women’s second goal came from AUS second team all-star Carolyn Campbell at 3:10 into the first period on the power play. Sydnee Parker was credited with the assist.

Jacinta Sullivan followed up just 20 seconds later with a goal off a Nicole Hansom assist to give the X-Women the 3-0 jump in the game over the fifth seeded Tigers. The Tigers pulled starting goaltender Ashley Boutilier after the third StFX goal.

The first period wrapped up without any further damage, and both teams were held off the score sheet up until 15:38 of the second period when Campbell notched her second power play goal of the game. Hansom picked up her second assist of the afternoon, along with Jenna Downey.

The X-Women wrapped up the game with third period goals from veteran forward Jessica Shanahan and freshman Brittney Perkins. Shanahan scored unassisted at 11:28 then assisted on the Perkins goal at 13:37.

The X-Women held the slight advantage in the shot department in the game at 33-27. Katie Harvieux tallied the 27 saves and the shutout win in nets for StFX while Emelie Enderfors took the loss for Dalhousie.

With the win, the X-Women will have a day off Friday as they await their next round robin game Saturday at 3:00 pm versus the third seeded Saint Mary’s Huskies. The Huskies and Tigers will meet Friday at 3:00. The winner advancing out of Pool B will play the Pool A winner Sunday afternoon at 2:00 pm in the AUS championship game. Moncton (1), St. Thomas (4) and UPEI (6) make up Pool A.
