The CIS ranked No. 5 X-Women hockey team picked up a close 2-1 win over the Mount Allison Mounties Saturday afternoon at the StFX Keating Centre.
\r\nMount Allison goaltender Meghan Corley-Byrne kept the Mounties in the game, recording 50 saves in net as the X-Women outshot the Mounties by a resounding 52-7 margin.
\r\nThe two teams skating through a scoreless first period as the X-Women led 14-3 in the shot department. The Mounties struck first blood in the second period as Jillian Greene notched an unassisted power play marker at the 4:20 mark.
\r\nCorley-Byrne kept the X-Women off the score sheet in the second period, despite mounting pressure and a peppering of shots throughout the 20 minutes. StFX rookie forward Brittney Perkins rang a shot off the cross bar and Sidney Ritchie was stopped in the slot from point blank range on two of the X-women’s best chances of the period. They were also 0 for 4 in power play opportunities after 40 minutes of play.
\r\nThird year forward Carolyn Campbell finally solved Corley-Byrne early into the third period as she scored three minutes in, breaking in alone down the left side after a Mount A line change left some open ice. Suzanne Fenerty and Brittney Perkins assisted on the play.
\r\nLess then two minutes later Fenerty scored the X-Women’s second goal of the game, on the power play, off a shot from the point. Abygail Laking assisted and the 2-1 lead held throughout the remainder of the period.
\r\nX-Women captain Suzanne Fenerty was named the Subway Player of the Game and first star, while Meghan Corley-Byrne was the second star from Mount Allison and Carolyn Campbell earned third star honors for X.
\r\nKatie Greenway earned the win in nets for StFX who improve to 14-2-3 on the season and remain atop the AUS conference in first place with 31 points. They are currently 4 points ahead of CIS ranked No. 4 Moncton and have three games in hand over the Aigles Bleus (13-2-1).
