X-Women hockey win 2 at home

The CIS ranked No. 5 X-Women hockey team added a pair of W’s to their win column over the weekend and in doing so jumped into sole possession of first place in the AUS standings.

With a 2-0 win over Mount Allison and a 5-1 win over UPEI, the X-Women improved to 6-2-0 on the season and have 12 points, two ahead of second place Saint Mary’s.

On Saturday afternoon at the StFX Keating Centre, goals by first year players Brittney Perkins and Daniela Falconio were all the X-Women needed in their 2-0 shutout over the visiting Mount Allison Mounties.

Jenna Downey and Nicole Hansom assisted on both X goals in a game which saw StFX outshoot Mount A by a whooping 39-15 margin. Mounties goaltender Meghan Corley-Byrne played well between the pipes in the losing effort, while Katie Harvieux earned the win in the StFX net.

Harvieux picked up her second win of the weekend on Sunday with a 5-1 victory over the UPEI Panthers. She had 16 saves on net as the X-Women outshot their opponents by another big margin at 44-17.

Jessica Shanahan was the Player of the Game for StFX as she scored a natural hat trick and added an assist for the blue and white. Shanahan’s three goals came after teammates Marilynn Hay and Carolyn Campbell built up a 2-0 lead after the first period of play.

\r\n

Shanahan scored two second period goals and notched a third period power play marker.  Daniela Falconio and Suzanne Fenerty each had two assists in the game. Danielle Maxwell scored the lone goal for the Panthers midway through the second period.

After three home wins in a row, the X-Women will hit the road this weekend for rematches against both the Mounties and Panthers. Saturday evening they will visit Mount Allison, followed by a Sunday afternoon stint in Charlottetown.
