Ice X-Women beat Moncton, can't solve St. Thomas

The hockey X-Women skated away with a 4-1 win over the defending AUS champion Moncton Aigles Bleues Sunday afternoon at the StFX Keating Centre.

Marieve Provost opened the scoring in the game for Moncton with an early power play goal just 1:50 into the first period as Anna Barrett was sent to the box for body checking.

\r\n

The X-Women would reply with a power play goal of their own to even the game, but not until halfway through the second period, as Jessica Shanahan beat Aigles Bleues netminder Kathy Desjardins.

Anna Barrett scored the go-ahead and ultimate game winning goal for the X-Women at the 14:02 mark of the second period. Nicole Hansom fired a shorthanded, unassisted marker in the third period and Carolyn Campbell wrapped up the X scoring with an empty net goal.

\r\n

Anna Barrett was named the Subway Player of the Game for her strong effort put forth and veteran netminder Katie Harvieux earned the win with 24 saves on goal. Desjardins took the loss as the X-Women outshot the Aigles 37-25.

StFX wasn’t as fortunate on the road Friday night as they dropped a 3-1 decision to the St. Thomas Tommies in Fredericton.

\r\n

The Tommies scored one goal in each period to build up a 3-0 lead. Sidney Ritchie scored the lone StFX goal 6:10 into the third period but the X-Women could not overcome the deficit.

\r\n

They were 0 for 7 on the power play and could not put the puck past Tommies goaltender and Player of the Game Julia Sharun who had 39 saves in the game. StFX doubled St. Thomas in shots 40-21.

The X-Women’s regular season record now sits at 4-2-0 and they have 8 points, two back of first place Saint Mary’s (5-1-0). The X-Women will play a pair of home games this weekend at the StFX Keating Centre. Saturday afternoon the Mount Allison Mounties (0-5-0) will be in town for a 2:00 pm puck drop, while Sunday, also at 2:00, the UPEI Panthers (2-2-0) will provide the opposition.
