X-Women clinch second place

The hockey X-Women clinched second place overall in the AUS conference despite a close 3-2 shootout loss to the St. Thomas Tommies Saturday afternoon. They also earned an 8-5 win over the UPEI Panthers on Sunday. Both games were played at the StFX Keating Centre.

The Tommies earned their third win over the X-Women this year in four match-ups between the two teams, although they needed a shootout to do it this time around as Dominique Bernier notched the shootout winner.

St. Thomas held a 2-0 lead after two periods play with a first period goal by Lyse Rossignol and a second period goal by Kayla Blackmore on their only shot of the period. Anna Barrett got the X-Women on the board with an early third period goal and Christina Davis tied the game with 4:16 left to go in the game on the powerplay.

Although the teams exchanged scoring chances in the overtime frame and the X-Women had outshot the Tommies by a staggering 46-15 margin, in the end it was St. Thomas who came out on the win column. Julia Sharun earned the win in nets for the Tommies while Katie Harvieux took the loss for X.

On Sunday afternoon the X-Women managed an 8-5 win over the visiting UPEI Panthers but in doing so gave up three power play goals to their opponents.

The X-Women held a 3-1 lead after one period of play and a 6-4 lead after two en route to the 8-5 victory, their 18th of the season. Eight different X-Women found the back of the net including Christina Davis, Kelly Boudreau, Suzanne Fenerty, Anna Barrett, Jessica Shanahan, Carolyn Campbell, Catie Gavin and Kristen Ezard.

Replying for the Panthers was Janelle Parent who scored a hat trick, along with Jenelle MacKenzie and Amber Gaudette. Elizabeth Legay took the loss in nets for the Panthers while Katie Harvieux earned the win for the X-Women. StFX outshot the Panthers 35-25 in the game.

The X-Women have one regular season game remaining, they will travel to Halifax Sunday afternoon to face the Saint Mary’s Huskies at 2:00 pm. They have already clinched a first round bye in the AUS championships slated for March 6-8 at UPEI and currently sit in second place overall with an 18-3-2 record.
