X-Women hockey beat up on Huskies

The StFX X-Women beat the Saint Mary’s Huskies 9-1 on Wednesday night and secured a spot in the AUS championship tournament.

StFX spread the scoring out evenly, potting three goals in each period. In the first, Brayden Ferguson got things started at the 5:26 mark. Catie Gavin would get her first goal of the game just a minute and a half later. Then shorthanded, Kelly Boudreau made two SMU defenders look silly before going top corner to make it 3-0 after 1.

It was more of the same in the second. Jessica Shanahan scored on the power play and Gavin would ripple the mesh two more times to give her the hat-trick before the third period even started. That third period saw another power play goal from Shanahan, and goals from Boudreau and Sidney Ritchie. Meagan Bradbury had a late goal for SMU to break Katie Harvieux’s shutout.

Shanahan and Boudreau both finished with two goals and an assist. Ritchie and Ferguson each had a goal and an assist while Christina Davis added two helpers. Harvieux made eight saves for the win.

It was also a penalty filled affair with 20 minor penalties being handed out. StFX was 2 for 7 on the man advantage while SMU was 1 for 8.

With the win, the X-Women sit alone in second place in the AUS with 27 points and have clinched a spot in AUS championship tournament, which will take place at UPEI. They are five points behind league leading Moncton and four up on third place St. Thomas.

StFX will travel to Dalhousie to take on the Tigers this Friday in their only game of the weekend. The next home game is scheduled for February 6th, when the Tigers will visit Antigonish.
