Hockey X-Women beat 1st place Moncton in a shootout

The X-Women hockey team earned a hard fought win over the first place Universite de Moncton Aigles Bleues Sunday afternoon in New Brunswick with a 2-1 shootout victory.

Catie Gavin scored the game winning goal for the X-Women in the shootout, she was the fourth shooter. X netminder Katie Harvieux stopped CIS scoring leader Marieve Provost on the next shot to seal the win.

The X-Women had opened the scoring in the game with an early first period goal off the stick of Brayden Ferguson. Jessica Shanahan assisted on the play.

\r\n

The one goal lead held up until five minutes left in the third period when Joanie Dubois scored for the Aigles Bleues to even the game at 1-1 and send it into overtime.

\r\n

The Aigles Bleues had a 4 on 3 power play advantage for the better part of the first two minutes of overtime after a late third period X-Women penalty call, but were held off by StFX. 

\r\n

Catie Gavin’s shootout goal proved to be the game winner, securing the X-Women’s 8th win of the season and moving them into sole possession of second place in the AUS with 17 points and a 8-3-1 record.

In earlier weekend action, the X-Women dropped a close 3-2 game to the third place St. Thomas Tommies, despite outshooting their opponents by a 40-21 margin.

\r\n

Carolyn Campbell opened the scoring in the game with a first period goal at the 3:55 minute mark, but Lyse Rossignol tied the game for the Tommies in the second period.

\r\n

Dominique Bernier and Catherine Boudreau scored third period markers for St. Thomas just 26 seconds apart to put them ahead 3-1. Christina Davis evened the gap for X with a powerplay goal at 13:16 but the X-Women couldn’t put the rubber past Tommies netminder Julia Sharun for the remainder of the game.

Katie Harvieux had 18 saves in the losing effort for StFX.

\r\n

The X-Women hit the road again this weekend for games against the UPEI Panthers (2-9-0) and Mount Allison Mounties (3-7-1).
