X-Women fall short against Capers
X-Women fourth quarter comeback falls short as Capers defeat X-Women 71-65 Thursday night at Sullivan Fieldhouse
Sydney, NS - The Cape Breton Capers defeated the STFX X-Women 71-65 on Thursday at the Sullivan Fieldhouse in AUS women's basketball action.
Chermensa Van La Parra stood out for the Capers scoring 17 points, including a pair of three-pointers, while adding 8 assists. Kiyara Letlow dominated inside with a double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing 11 rebounds while going 10-for-12 from the free-throw line. Hannah Smith contributed 14 points, shooting 4-for-8 from beyond the arc.
For the X-Women, Ekaterina Karchevskaya led all scorers on the night with 18 points, while adding 6 rebounds. Krissy Cooper had 9 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Capers' 10 three-pointers were crucial, with Smith and Alicia Bowering combining for 7 of them.
The first quarter ended with the home team ahead by a score of 21-18. At the half, the Capers extended the lead to 10 points, 41-31.
The third quarter saw the Capers go ahead by as much as 15 points and they kept the lead throughout, closing out with a 56-44 advantage.
The X-Women came alive in the fourth quarter, closing the gap and putting the pressure on CBU. They battled hard and outscored the Capers 21-15, but the home team held on for the win.
The same two teams will play a rematch when the Capers visit the X-Women on Saturday, January 25th at STFX's Coach K Court with tip-off at 6:00 pm.
