X-Women earn key victory over Reds
The visiting STFX X-Women defeated the UNB REDS 55-49 in AUS action Friday night
(FREDERICTON, NB) The visiting STFX X-Women defeated the UNB REDS 55-49 in Atlantic University Sport women's basketball action Friday night at UNB's Richard J. Currie Center.
The REDS faced significant challenges in the first half, held to less than 10 points in both the first and second quarters.
Ayla White (Ancaster, ON) led the X-Women with a strong start, scoring 7 of their 19 points in the opening frame.
Ann Bastien (Terrebonne, QC) anchored the REDS' defense with multiple steals, but struggles on offense left them trailing the X-Women 19-9 after the first.
The REDS managed just two points in the first half of the second quarter, allowing the X-Women to extend their lead.
Back-to-back threes by McKinley Bezanson (Hantsport, NS) and Bastien sparked some momentum, but the REDS headed to half-time down 31-17.
The visitors maintained their advantage with solid defense and offense in the third, leading 46-27 through three.
The REDS put together a fourth quarter surges, nearly doubling their output from the first three quarters and outscoring the X-Women 23-9.
The REDS closed the gap to six, but their efforts weren't enough as the X-Women secured the win, 55-49.
Katie Butts (Ottawa, ON) led the REDS with 14 points and 15 rebounds.
For the X-Women, White led the scoring with 11 points, followed by Shannon Neita (Toronto, ON) with 10.
With the loss, UNB falls to 2-and-3, and are now fifth 5th in the AUS standings.
The X-Women are 3-and-2.
The REDS and X-Women meet again Saturday afternoon in a re-match. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00pm.
