X-Women Basketball launches pre-season campaign on Spanish courts

X-Women Basketball will start this pre-season unlike any other as they gear up for an unforgettable journey to the vibrant city of Barcelona. From August 21-29, the team will embark on a pre-season training camp and exhibition tour that promises both intense training and rich cultural experiences.

Under the leadership of second year Head Coach Matt Spencer, the X-Women are set to make their mark on an international stage. With sights set on refining skills and building chemistry in anticipation of the 2023-24 season, the team is fully committed to making the most of this unique opportunity.

 A Quest for Excellence

"I am thrilled that we have been able to make this vision a reality. We have nine players back from the 2023 squad and eight newcomers, and every one of them is chomping at the bit to get started. The fact that we get to do it in such a unique fashion is something that I am sure none of us will forget", notes Coach Spencer.

Senior point guard Katie Upham echoed her coach's excitement and optimism. "The prospect of training in a new environment, experiencing different styles of play, and bonding with my teammates in Spain is very exciting. I think I speak for all of us when I say that we're ready to give our all, stay present in every moment, and for me, make this final season one for the books!"

Fellow guard Laia Torrent has a slightly different perspective as she is welcoming the team to her home city. "For the team to come to Barcelona and see the city where I grew up as well as the Catalan culture will be unforgettable. I think the team will have the chance to see a different way to play the game and we'll have the unique opportunity to play against high level teams so early in our season. Having my team come here is special to me because it means that I'll have my family and friends in the stands cheering for me for the first time in almost four years!"

Nearly every part of the experience will be new for incoming freshman Abby Cameron. "I was excited when I committed to the X-Women last fall, but I never dreamed that my first practice with the team would be in Barcelona! To say I'm excited would be an understatement. We've done some team meetings and workshops, and through talking to some of the other incoming players, I know we've all been working hard to make sure we arrive in great shape and ready to tackle whatever challenges await. I can't wait to actually get there and get started though."

Taking on International Talent

The highlight of the tour will undoubtedly be the friendly matches against local teams. On August 24th, the X-Women will face off against a skilled Barcelona Select U23 team in a scrimmage game. This friendly match up will not only showcase the talents of both teams but also serve as a first test for the young X-Women roster.

Continuing their exhibition tour, the X-Women are set to engage in two exciting matchups against teams who are preparing for the inaugural "LF Challenge" league – one step below the highest level of professional basketball in Spain. On August 26th, the X-Women will take on Boat Mataro. August 27th features a match up against Lima-Horta Basket, StFX's host team during the tour.

"I am eager to see how well we can compete with some more seasoned, experienced professional teams in Spain. Our objective is to quickly sort out who wants to compete, who listens, and who can think quickly on their feet. These games should be a great test for us," comments Spencer.

Balancing Hard Work and Exploration

While basketball will undoubtedly be at the forefront of the X-Women's journey, they are also eager to immerse themselves in the rich culture and history of Barcelona. In between training sessions and games, the team will have the chance to explore the city's iconic landmarks, indulge in its world-renowned cuisine, and engage with the local community. Surely the team will also find time for some shopping and water fun!
