X-Women fall to Sea-Hawks

Antigonish, NS – The Memorial Sea-Hawks improved to 4-3 on the season with an 80-57 win over the STFX X-Women Saturday night on Coach K Court.

The Sea-Hawks got out to a 20-11 advantage after the first quarter of play and built that up to a 16-point lead at halftime, 40-24.

Memorial guard Alana Short (Barrie, ON) scored 18 of her squad's first half points.

Aliyah Fraser (New Glasgow, NS) netted seven points in the opening half for the X-Women.

The Sea-Hawks were up by 20 points with two minutes left in the third quarter and posted a 58-37 edge on the scoreboard after 30 minutes.

The fourth quarter was closer in scoring with Memorial having a 22-20 advantage, though they had built up enough of a lead to play out the 80-57 victory.

Short finished with a game-high 27 points and earned Subway player of the game honours. She also had six rebounds, a pair of assists and a steal and block on the night.

Rebecka Ekstrom (Taby, Sweden) and Gabrielle Roche (St. John's, NL) each scored 12 points for the Sea-Hawks. Ines Salat Margarit (Barcelona, Spain) had a double-double night with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

X-Women guard Katie Upham (North River, NS) was the STFX player of the game. She netted 10 points for the home team.

Ekaterina Karchevskaya (Mogilev, Belarus) scored 14 points and had seven rebounds for X, while Fraser and Melina Collins (Halifax, NS) each contributed nine points apiece.

The same two teams will be back in action tomorrow on STFX's Coach K Court with a 12:00 pm tip-off.
