X-Women return to win column

The StFX X-Women (4-7) snapped a two-game losing streak with a 77-63 win over the Dalhousie Tigers (5-5) in Atlantic University Sport (AUS) basketball action Friday night in Halifax.

The X-Women outscored the Tigers 26-11 in the fourth quarter to seal the victory, worth four points in the standings.

Post player Kolbi Roper, who earned Subway player of the game honours, led the X-Women with 18 points, while adding six rebounds.

Fifth-year senior guard Lia St. Pierre contributed 18 points, eight rebounds, six assists and six steals in another stellar all-around effort.

Four starters, including Vanessa Pickard, with 15, and Rebecca Sheehan (13), scored in double figures for the blue and white.

The X-Women snagged 18 steals in the game, led by St. Pierre (six) and Sheehan with five. Bench players Melissa Gottschall and Kimberley Taylor added three apiece.

Team player of the game Tessa Stammberger had a double-double for the Tigers, with 19 points and 12 rebounds, while adding five assists.

Guard Courtney Thompson chipped in 16 points and six rebounds.

The X-Women held leads of 18-15 and 38-30 after the first quarter and at half-time. The Tigers outscored the X-Women 22-13 in the third quarter to comeback with a 52-51 edge after 30 minutes before StFX took the game in the final frame.

The X-Women return to action next weekend, when they host the Memorial SeaHawks for a pair of games at Oland Centre.

Saturday, Jan. 25, the teams will tip-off at 6 p.m., while Sunday, Jan. 26, the start time is set for 11 a.m.
