X-Women vs Capers basketball preview

The StFX X-Women Basketball team will make a road trip to nearby Sydney, NS, on Wednesday, February 15th to clash with the Cape Breton Capers at 6:00pm. The X-Women are hoping to gain ground on fifth place Dalhousie by earning a victory, while the Capers will be looking to move into sole possession of second place in the conference with a win.

Capers:  11-5 record with 32 points, tied for second place in AUS conference

X-Women:  8-8 record with 18 points, sixth place in AUS conference

X-Women vs Capers:  The X-Women have a 2-1 record against the Capers to date this year. StFX won a nail biter 72-71 back on the opening day of the season November 8th, 2011 in Antigonish, then earned their second win with a 66-56 showing in Cape Breton on January 11th. The Capers were able to defeat the X-Women on January 21st, 2012 when they won 75-67 over the blue and white in Antigonish. The X-Women will be looking to gain two points in the standings when they head to the Sullivan Fieldhouse on Wednesday evening, always a tough barn to play in.

Key Players:  Freshman sensation Vanessa Pickard has been excellent all season for the X-Women, currently sitting in sixth in league scoring, averaging 15.9 points per game and fourth in minutes played, averaging 34.25 minutes a game. Donisha Young has also been a consistent offensive threat for the blue and white, coming in at eighth in conference scoring, averaging 14.6 points per game and fourth in rebounding, collecting 7.9/game. Cassie Cooke has been a standout in the AUS and for the Capers this season, sitting second overall in points per game at 21.9 and third in assists with 4.44 a game. Jahlica Khirnon has also been steady for the Capers, ranking 14th in points per game at 11.7 and third in steals per game at 2.29. 

Game Notes: 
The X-Women are ninth in points per game and free throws made per game in the country.

The Capers are second in assists per game, second in field goals per game and third in points per game in the nation.

Cape Breton is riding a wave of confidence after defeating CIS No. 7 and AUS-leading Acadia this past Sunday. They are looking for a win to help them secure an AUS first round playoff bye. The X-Women have already punched thier ticket to the AUS championship as the host team but want to finish the season on a high note and gain some ground inthe standings.

The game should be very high scoring as both teams have very well balanced offenses.
