High scoring X-Women handle Panthers 98-67

The StFX X-Women were able to take care of business Sunday afternoon in Antigonish, NS, handing the UPEI Panthers a 98-67 loss. Freshman Vanessa Pickard led the way for the blue and white, raining in 22 points and garnering six steals in the victory. Six X-Women were in double-scoring digits for the home team.

Donisha Young and Brittney Brown played strong games for the X-Women. Young collected 14 points and seven rebounds while Brown scored 13 points. Kolbi Roper contributed 12 points to the win and Rebecca Sheehan and Anne Kiberd each scored 11 points apiece. Sheehan also added eight rebounds, six steals and four assists in addition to her 11 points. Kiberd was three-for-six from three-point range and Pickard drained four buckets from behind the three-point arc for StFX. The X-Women delivered their well-balanced attack without star forward Kirsten Jones who was nursing a knee injury.

The score was 42-34 for the X-Women at half time with time for the Panthers to come back in the game, but the X-Women were not about to let that happen as they outscored UPEI 56-33 in the final half to seal the 98-67 victory.

Amy Gough played well for the Panthers in the losing effort, amassing 21 points and six rebounds. Terrilyn Herrick scored ten points. Laura Power contributed nine points and Jenna Jones scored eight as the Panthers shot 32.8% from field goal range, 36.4% from the three point line and 77.8% in free throws. The X-Women numbers were 38.8% in field goal percentage, 37.9% from three point range and 75% from the free throw line.

With the win the X-Women improve to 8-8 on the season, remaining in sixth place in the AUS standings with 18 points, two behind the fifth place Dalhousie Tigers. The Panthers fall to 2-15 in eighth place. Next on the schedule for StFX is a mid-week game to Cape Breton this coming Wednesday to face the third place Capers (11-5).
