Runners compete in four events at Athletics NS Open

Halifax, NS – The STFX track team competed at the Athletics NS Indoor Open on Friday and Saturday at the Canada Games Centre. STFX athletes competed in the 3000m, 1500m, 1000m and 600m events over the course of the two-day meet.

Friday night saw the running of the 3000m races where several X runners posted personal best times. In the women's race (age 19-34), Allie Sandluck was the first place winner, finishing with a time of 9:53.98. Teammate Eve Carreau was second at 9:59.50, while Brynn Hebert (10:31.13) and Quincy Rorsaert-Smith (11:12.08) were fifth and tenth, respectively.

In the men's 3000m race for age 19-34, it was an X-Men sweep of the top three placings. Luke MacDonald was the race winner, clocking in at 8:39.03. Luc Gallant (8:43.81) came second and Liam McCullagh (8:45.32 was third. Freshman X runner Griffin Gamble took top spot in the age 18-19 division with a time of 8:45.65. Andrew Lupenette was fourth in that race with a 9:14.25 showing.

On Saturday, several X-Women ran in both the 1000m and 600m events. in the age 18-19 division, Hannah McIntrye was first in the 600m with a time of 1:38.18 and came second in the 1000m at 2:58. 31. Sarah Watson was second in the 600m (1:39.51) and third in the 1000m (2:58.76). Jillian Bennett (1:47.51) was sixth in the 600m event.

In the women's 20-34 division, Caroline Ash garnered a pair of first place finishes, claiming top spot in both races. She crossed at 1:38.19 in the 600m and 2:57.96 in the 1000m. Caden Lee was second in both races as she posted times of 1:42.62 and 3:01.42, with teammate Brynn Hebert coming in third in both events with 1:42.75 and 3:07. 05 results. Maya Black came fifth in the 600m (1:45.99) and sixth in the 1000m (3:11.37).

AUS cross country bronze medalist Eileen Benoit was the lone X-Women competitor in the 1500m race on Saturday and she was the first place finisher amongst a field of 18. Benoit posted a winning time of 4:38.55.

In the men's 1500m race, Liam McCullagh was the race winner with a time of 4:05.50. X-Men Mathew Lawton (4:14.89) and Andrew Lupenette (4:17.40) also raced and were third and fourth in the age 18-19 division.

Liam Patterson ran to a pair of first place finishes as he took top spot in both the 600m and 1000m events for the age 20-34 division. He posted times of 1:24.57 in the 600m race and 2:30.18 in the 1000m. Jack Wierzbicki was second in the 600m (1:24.68) and third in the 1000m (2:33.04), while Noah Proulx came sixth in both races with times of 1:30.46 and 2:46.04.

Adrian Brennan competed in the 600m race for X and came fourth with a time of 1:28.93. Ewan Fraser's time of 2:46.37 garnered him second spot in the 1000m race in the 18-19 division.

The STFX runners will be back in action on February 2-3 when they travel to Saint John, NB for the UNB SJ Open.
