Track athletes in action at Halifax meet

Halifax, NS – The StFX track & field team competed at their first meet of 2015 Saturday at the Canada Games Center as Athletics Nova Scotia hosted the event.

StFX sent a large contingent of X-Women and X-Men athletes who competed in running, jumping and throwing events.

In women's action, StFX had 10 competitors in the 60m dash including second and third place finishers Hayley Wilson and Eilish MacQuarrie who finished with times of 8.00 and 8.02, respectively. Jillian Murphy was fifth at 8.11, while Beth Lawrence (8.21), Abbi Finnan (8.22) and Candace Cruickshank (8.22) placed seventh through ninth.

Also competing in the 60m dash for the X-Women were Bridget Brennan (8.35, 12th), Nadine Otten (8.47, 14th), Jillian Nolan (8.62, 17th) and M.C. Thompson (8.64, 19th).

Finnan won the 60m hurdles event with a time of 9.56, while Otten was fifth at 12.54.

Many of the same athletes also raced in the 300m dash with MacQuarrie taking the top spot clocking in at 41.99. Brennan (43.22) and Lawrence (43.31) placed fifth and sixth, while Cruickshank was ninth at 45.11.

Kevyn Timmons placed 11th overall in the 300m with a time of 45.33. Rounding out the StFX competitors were Nolan (47.32, 14th) and Brittany Wadden (49.07, 17th).

Allie Flower completed in the 300m dash for women aged 18-19 and placed second overall with a time of 43.58. She also raced the 600m race in the same age category and won the race with a 1:42.47 posting.

In the women's 1000m race (age 18-19), Olivia MacDonald placed second with a time of 3:25.10. She was fourth in the 1500m event (age 18-19) with a 5:34.68 showing.

In the 1000m event (age 20-34), Liz MacDonald came third overall with a clocking of 3:05.90.

Four X-Women competed in the 1500m (age 20-24) and placed sixth through ninth spots including Ginny Anderson (5:07.06), Leah Gouthro (5:12.96), Kendra MacNeil (5:13.01) and Maura Gillis (5:18.20).

In the 3000m race, MacNeil was fourth overall (11:10.26), followed by her X teammates Anderson (11:17.82) and Gillis (11:35.03) in fifth and sixth.

In the jumping events, Thompson registered a 1.45m jump in the high jump seeding but no height in the final round. Wilson placed second in the long jump with a 5.04m showing, Brennan (5.01m) and Thompson (4.72m) were third and fourth, respectively, while Wilson claimed top spot in the triple jump with an 11.25m jump.

In the men's jumping events, Cameron Glover represented the X-Men in the age 18-19 high jump, placing second with a 1.75m jump. Jake McKenna was second in the men's age 20-34 high jump with a 1.75m placement. He was third in the long jump at 5.69m. Glover came fourth in the long jump (age 18-19) at 5.11m.

In the men's sprints, three X-Men amongst a field of 23 competed in the 60m dash. Matt Murphy was the top X finisher in fifth place with a time of 7.26. Matt Bartley (7.32) placed eighth and Mackenzie Munroe (7.33) was ninth.

In the 60m hurdles, Timothy Brennan placed fourth (age 18-19) with a clocking of 9.69. McKenna was third in the age 20-34 event with a 9.55.

Brennan placed first in the 300m dash, age 18-19 category, with a time of 37.47, while five X-Men competed in the 300m for age 20-34, including Munroe who was third at 36.23. Andrew Bain (37.61) and Murphy (37.61) were ninth and tenth, while Thomas Faour (38.29) placed 13th and Miguel Hosking (39.42) was 17th.

Munroe was the top X-Men finisher in the 600m race as well, coming in second with a clocking of 1:22.12. Bain placed fourth at 1:22.98 and Ryan Washburn (1:28.73) was eighth. Brennan came second in the age 18-19 600m race with a time of 1:26.29.

Veteran runner Bryden Tate was the lone X competitor in the 1000m event. He came second overall with a 2:38.64 showing.

In the 1500m event, Alex Cyr claimed top spot with a personal best time of 3:59.51. Cal DeWolfe (4:00.71) and Scott Donald (4:01.91) came fourth and fifth while Nick Favero (4:15.95) was ninth. Also competing in the race for the X-Men were Tate (4:17.81, 11th), Ryan O'Regan (4:23.39, 12th), Matt Eliot (4:27.83, 13th), Warren Ferguson (4:28.56, 14th) and Corey McNamara (4:41.68, 15th).

Cyr was also the top X finisher in the men's 3000m race, placing third overall with a time of 8:52.45. Donald was fifth at 8:57.74, while Favero (9:09.84), DeWolfe (9:39.70), Ferguson (9:40.12) and Eliot (9:51.28) were seventh through tenth. McNamara rounded out the StFX placements in 14th spot at 10:22.18.

Earlier in the week X-Women and X-Men throwers competed at the ANS/Truro Lions competition on January 11th.

Hailey Polluck, Ellen Murphy and Hannah Polluck competed in the women's shot put. Hailey Polluck finished first overall with a 12.05m throw while Murphy (10.71m) was fourth and Hannah Polluck (10.38m) was fifth.

In the weight throw, Murphy was the top X finisher with an 11.84m throw, placing first overall. Hailey Polluck was second with an 11.80m toss and Hannah Polluck was fourth at 11.43m. Jessica Warrener (9.37m) and Brooke Newsome (9.00m) also competed for the X-Women and placed fifth and sixth, respectively.

In the men's weight throw, Robert Kennedy came fifth overall with a toss of 12.47m. In the shot put Kennedy took home top spot with a 13.16m throw.
