X-Men fall 5-1 to No. 1 ranked REDS
U SPORTS #1 ranked UNB REDS continued their stellar season with a dominant 5-1 win over the STFX X-Men
ANTIGONISH, NS - The U SPORTS #1 ranked UNB REDS continued their stellar season with a dominant 5-1 win over the STFX X-Men on Friday night at the Charles V Keating Centre.
With the win, the REDS claimed the regular season series between the teams 3-2, with the X-Men the only team to defeat the REDS this season. UNB previously clinched a first-round bye in the upcoming AUS playoffs, while the X-Men remain in fourth place.
There were plenty of heavy hits in the early going, with both teams looking to make an impression. The potent UNB powerplay came close to opening the scoring eight minutes in but a couple of big saves from STFX goalie Patrick Leaver kept the game even. STFX looked to pull ahead with a late powerplay of their own, but the UNB penalty kill made sure the period ended 0-0.
The REDS continued to test Leaver, and opened the scoring halfway through the second, with Oscar Plandowski snapping one high after picking up a pass from Sean McGurn. McGurn made it 2-0 five minutes later, stuffing in his own rebound after breaking in two-on-one with rookie Cole Huckins.
Kale MacCallum made it 3-0 three minutes into the third, firing one top shelf while the teams played four-on-four. Alex Christopoulos got STFX on the board two minutes later, potting one low off a pass from Charlie Callaghan while up a player.

STFX tried to rally for a comeback but goals from Camaryn Baber and Huckins in under a minute made the score 5-1 for the REDS, who held on for the win. Frustrations boiled over following the goals, with players from both teams getting the gate.
Leaver finished the night with 29 saves, while Samuel Richard made 11 stops for UNB in the win.
The X-Men host their final home game of the regular season Saturday February 8, with a faceoff against Moncton at 7 p.m. The REDS continue their road trip with a game in Halifax tomorrow, February 8, against the Dalhousie Tigers at 7 p.m.
