Callaghan wins international hockey gold with Team Canada

STFX X-Men Hockey defenseman Charlie Callaghan can add a FISU World University Games gold medal to his inventory. Callaghan was a member of the U SPORTS Team Canada all-star team that competed in Torino, Italy over the past 12 days at the international event.
Canada beat Slovakia 3-1 in the championship game played Wednesday evening in Torino. They had advanced to the final game via a decisive 10-2 win over the USA that featured Callaghan score a goal and contribute an assist.
In round robin preliminary action that took place Jan. 11-16, the Canadians earned an 11-0 win over Korea, fell 2-1 to Czechia in a shootout, defeated Kazakhstan 4-3 in a shootout, and beat Sweden 8-2. Callaghan had two assists in the game against Sweden.
That earned them nine points and second place overall in Group A where they advanced to play Japan (third place in Group B) in the quarterfinals. They easily won that playoff game 9-1, setting the stage for their semifinal and championship victories.
Callaghan will return to the X-Men lineup this weekend. The 2023-24 U SPORTS and AUS all-rookie player currently leads all STFX defensemen in scoring this season with 18 points (6G, 12A).
