X-Men come from behind to open AUS season with win over Axemen

WOLFVILLE, NS The STFX X-Men (1-0-0) started the AUS season with a 3-2 victory on Friday night over the Acadia Axemen (0-1-0).

After a scoreless first period, STFX scored the opening goal of the game 5:19 into the second period, with Matthew Struthers netting the first X goal of the year.

Through two periods STFX led 1-0, setting the stage for a high-scoring third period.

Bailey Peach tied the game with a power play goal 3:18 into the third period, followed by Brendan Sellan putting Acadia ahead just a 1:33 later.

The X-Men answered only 50 seconds later with Declan Smith evening the game 2-2 with 14:20 to go in the game. The three goals came in just 2:22.

Raegan Wiles netted the game-winning goal at the 11:57 mark, on the power play, assisted by Struthers and Matthew Philip.

Joseph Raaymakers made 49 saves in the victory for STFX, while Thomas Couture made 31 saves on 34 shots in the loss.

Saturday night Acadia travels to Halifax to face the Dalhousie Tigers (0-1-0), while STFX returns home to host the Saint Mary's Huskies (1-0-0).
