Panthers defeat X-Men 4-2

Charlottetown, PE – The UPEI Panthers (7-9-3) skated to a 4-2 win over the StFX X-Men (11-8-1) Saturday evening at the EastLink Centre.

Subway Player of the Game Cody Payne completed the UPEI comeback, scoring the game winner at the 17:04 mark of the third period. The goal, assisted by Brent Andrews and Marcus Power gave the Panthers a 3-2 edge late in the game. They later added an empty netter.

StFX held a 2-0 lead on goals from Bryson Cianfrone (Kristoff Kontos) at 15:14 of the first period and Jagger Dirk (Craig Duininck) at 4:17 of the second period.

At the 7:51 mark of the second, UPEI's Marcus Power scored their first goal on a Casey Babineu shot, with Brent Andrews getting the second assist.

JC Campagna (Beau McCue & Brock Beukeboom) scored off a rebound at 5:18 of the third period to tie the game 2-2.  Kurt Etchegary (Casey Babineau) rounded out the scoring with the empty net goal at 19:47.

Matt Mahalak made 17 saves in the UPEI net for the win, while Brandon Hope turned aside 24 saves in the loss for X. Shots favored the Panthers at 28-19.

The Panthers return to action this Wednesday, January 11 when they host Saint Mary's at 7:00 pm. The X-Men's next game is also on Wednesday when they travel to Dalhousie, also for 7:00 pm.
