Ben Wright scored 14:34 into overtime to give the UNB Varsity Reds a 3-2 win in the first game of the AUS men’s hockey final in Fredericton on Friday.
The Varsity Reds scored two goals in the third period to erase a 2-0 deficit. Hunter Tremblay got the first goal at 4:29 and Daine Todd scored UNB’s second just 2:13 later.
Jason Bast and Murdock MacLellan put St. F.X. ahead 2-0 with back-to-back goals during a 3:31 span early in the second period.
Travis Fullerton turned aside 22 shots in the UNB net and Joseph Perricone made 24 saves for X.
UNB’s Chris Culligan finished with a pair of assists and Tremblay also picked up a helper to give him a two-point night.
The best-of-five series resumes tonight in Fredericton at 7 p.m. The series shifts to Antigonish on Tuesday for Game 3 at 7 p.m. If a Game 4 is necessary, it will be in Antigonish on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Both teams have already secured a spot in the CIS Championship tournament in Fredericton, March 24-27.
