CIS TOP TEN TUESDAY (#7)
Alberta, Trinity Western open at No. 1 in
volleyball
On the men’s side, the reigning CIS champion Alberta Golden Bears open at No. 1 for the second consecutive year after kicking off conference play this past weekend with a pair of straight-set wins over UBC Okanagan. The Bears claimed the seventh national title in program history last march thanks to a 3-0 gold-medal triumph against Western.
Rounding out the top five in the first coaches’ poll are McMaster, Trinity Western, UBC and Brandon.
In women’s competition, the Trinity Western Spartans top the inaugural rankings following a 3-0, 3-2 sweep against Thompson Rivers on Thanksgiving weekend. The Spartans finished fifth at the 2014 CIS championship.
Alberta, Montreal, Ottawa and UBC Okanagan complete the top five.
Two notable absents from the first women’s poll are defending national champion Manitoba and 2014 silver medallist UBC, which had captured six straight CIS banners before settling for second place last winter. Both the Bisons and Thunderbiards are off to 0-2 starts this fall.
In other CIS sports, Guelph (women’s & men’s cross country), McGill (women’s hockey), Alberta (men’s hockey), StFX (women’s rugby) and Trinity Western (women’s soccer) hold on to their No. 1 status this week.
In men’s soccer, York moves past reigning national champion UBC in first place. The T-Birds fall to No. 1 after suffering their first loss of the season last Friday, a 2-1 setback against Fraser Valley.
