CIS TOP TEN TUESDAY (#21)
McGill back at No. 1 in women’s hockey

OTTAWA (CIS) – The reigning national champion McGill University Martlets are back atop the CIS women’s hockey rankings following an impressive win over their archrivals, the Montreal Carabins, who fall to No. 2 in the final coaches’ poll of the campaign.

In other CIS sports, Windsor (women’s basketball), Carleton (men’s basketball), Alberta (men’s hockey), UBC (women’s & men’s swimming), Toronto (women’s track & field) and Windsor (men’s track & field) all hold on to their No. 1 status.

In women’s hockey, McGill overcame an early 3-0 deficit to defeat Montreal 6-3 on Sunday, a result which evened the season series at two apiece and created a deadlock atop the RSEQ standings with one league game remaining for both teams. Should the cross-town rivals finish with identical records, Montreal would earn first place thanks to a positive goal differential in head-to-head competition. The Martlets (15-4) wrap up conference play on Friday against Ottawa (7-11), while the Carabins (15-4) visit Concordia (6-7-5) on Sunday.

McGill welcomed Olympic gold medallist Mélodie Daoust back to its lineup this past weekend and it quickly paid dividends. The former CIS rookie of the year and MVP had six points (2-4-6) in two contests - including three assists against Montreal - in her return to action after a six-month rehab from a pre-training-camp injury.

The CIS winter championship season kicks off on Thursday with swimming in Victoria (Feb. 19-21).

CIS Men’s Hockey Top 10 (#17)
National leaders survive first round of playoffs

OTTAWA (CIS) – The reigning University Cup champion Alberta Golden Bears top the CIS men’s hockey rankings for the 17th time in as many national polls this season.

The Bears (24-3-1), who enjoy a bye this week as the Canada West playoffs get underway, swept the first-place votes from the media panel for the seventh straight week.

The only changes in the new media poll see the UQTR Patriotes (19-4-3 regular season / 2-0 playoffs) move ahead of the Windsor Lancers (22-4-1 / 2-1) in seventh place, while the St. Francis Xavier X-Men (17-9-2 / 2-0) replace Mount Royal at No. 10.

The rest of the Top 10 remains unchanged, including the No. 2 UNB Varsity Reds (22-4-2),  No. 3 Acadia Axemen (20-5-3), No. 4 Calgary Dinos (20-8), No. 5 Saint Mary’s Huskies (20-7-1 / 2-1), No. 6 McGill Redmen (21-5 / 2-1) and No. 9 Carleton Ravens (20-5-1 / 2-0).

The AUS and OUA conference playoffs kicked off this past week with UNB and Acadia enjoying a bye, Saint Mary’s, McGill and Windsor all surviving a scare, and UQTR and Carleton breezing through the opening round.

The Redmen (vs. Concordia) and Lancers (vs. Brock) both dropped Game 1 of their best-of-three OUA series before rebounding with back-to-back wins. Windsor needed overtime in Game 3 to eliminate a resilient Brock team and goaltender Adrian Volpe, who made 125 saves in the series.

In the Atlantic, the Huskies also found themselves in trouble against Moncton. After being dominated 5-1 in Game 2, they had to come from behind in the third period of their decisive contest to prevail 3-2.

Meanwhile, the Patriotes were impressive in a 6-3, 10-3 sweep of Nipissing, while the Ravens dominated UOIT 5-2 and 6-1.

The matchups for the next round include:

Best-of-5 AUS semifinals:
No. 10 StFX vs. No. 2 UNB (Game 1: Thursday at UNB)
No. 5 Saint Mary’s vs. No. 3 Acadia (Game 1: Wednesday at Acadia)

Best-of-3 OUA East semifinals:
Queen’s vs. No. 6 McGill (Game 1: Wednesday at McGill)
