TOP 10 TUESDAY: Trinity Western, Alberta open at No.1 in volleyball

The Alberta Pandas (women) and two-time defending U SPORTS champion Trinity Western Spartans (men) begin the season as the top-ranked volleyball teams in the nation.

Trinity Western (2-0) won back-to-back U SPORTS championships last March after a 3-1 gold-medal victory over Alberta, who begin the new campaign at No.8. The Spartans picked up a pair of 3-0 sweeps at Saskatchewan over the weekend and will host UBC Okanagan for a weekend set beginning Friday.

On the women's side, the reigning U SPORTS silver medalist Alberta (0-0) starts the year in top spot. The Pandas, who fell to No. 8 UBC in four sets in last year's national final, kick off their season with a home-and-home against MacEwan this weekend.

In men's hockey, Alberta (6-0-0) takes over the pole position from defending champion UNB (5-0-1). The Varsity Reds lost 3-2 in overtime to then-No.7 Acadia Saturday before rebounding to beat then-No.9 Saint Mary's 4-2 Saturday, while the Golden Bears beat Calgary twice during the weekend.

In other U SPORTS rankings, Laval (men's cross country and women's soccer), Queen's (women's cross country), Montreal (men's soccer), StFX (women's rugby) and Alberta (women's hockey) all remain national leaders for another week.

Note: Top 10 rankings have concluded in women's rugby. Next Tuesday (Oct. 31) rankings begin for men's and women's basketball.
