Amelia Saputo Centre for Healthy Living

PLEASE NOTE:  Due to the ongoing Saputo Centre renovation project, please refer to the update below on when facilities and spaces within the building will re-open.

The Amelia Saputo Centre for Healthy Living (formerly Oland Centre) is the home of the varsity X-Men and X-Women, along with being the primary facility for StFX recreation programs and StFX intramurals. It houses the offices of StFX Athletics & Recreation coaches and staff.

Originally built in 1967, the building is in the process of a facility renewal. The centre features a main gymnasium with seating for 1200 spectators for basketball or volleyball games. The main gymnasium can also accommodate three courts for basketball or volleyball widthwise and has hosted numerous games, tournaments, sports camps, minor sports groups, intramural activities and special events. Staging may be set up for concerts or large conferences.
Adjacent to the main gymnasium is the auxiliary gymnasium featuring one basketball/volleyball court. The auxiliary gymnasium serves as a practice facility for StFX varsity teams, along with a teaching area for Human Kinetics skills classes, Education classes and recreational space for StFX Recreation Department members.

In addition to the two gymnasiums, the Amelia Saputo Centre for Healthy Living houses a varsity weight room, sports medicine clinic, Human Kinetics MAXX lab, combat room, team dressing rooms, and the Kehoe conference meeting room.

FACILITY RENEWAL - We are renovating!

Thanks to the gracious $10 million donation from Amelia & Lino Saputo, along with numerous other private donaors and a commitment from StFX students, athletic and recreation spaces are currently undergoing a multi-phased facility renewal project. PHASE 1 of the Amelia Saputo Centre for Healthy Living was completed in 2017 with the renovation of the main gymnasium. Coach K Court was installed, along with new bleachers, featuring comfortable individual seating and end bleacher seating for 1200 total.

PHASE 2A was completed in the spring of 2018 with new stadium bleachers and seats, featuring seating for 1100 people, including options for individual seats or bleacher seating. A new, enhanced physical and athletic therapy space also opened in March, 2019. This new area will provide enhanced lab instruction space for students taking courses in therapy, and expands our capacity to offer physical and athletic therapy services to students. PHASE 2B was completed in July, 2019 and included an overhaul of the varsity locker rooms.

PHASE 3 began in January, 2023 and is currently underway. This major renovation project includes a new public locker room, an expanded fitness centre for students & community, new varsity high performance centre, mulitpurpose recreational & fitness spaces, auxiliary gymnasium renovation, as well as new academic spaces in the Keating Centre.

Saputo Centre Renovation Update (as of Jan. 9, 2024)

As many of you are aware, there have been several delays for the renovations to the Saputo Centre. We are very sorry for the inconvenience this has caused. After consideration for opening as soon and safely as possible, a decision has been made to welcome students to the Fitness Centre on January 20th.

We are committed to providing an area for students this semester that benefits both physical and mental health.

This opening will take place in two phases:

Phase 1

Beginning January 20th, the Fitness Centre will open exclusively for StFX students. At this time, all brand-new exercise equipment will be available to use.  TV’s and mirrors will not be installed until the end of April and wifi access will be limited due to the continued construction in Saputo. As well, there will be no change rooms likely until late March 2024.

Free group fitness classes for students will continue to take place in the aerobic/dance studio located on the first floor of the Keating Centre.

Phase 2

Over the coming weeks, further communication will be shared regarding the official opening of the Fitness Centre for the greater campus & town community. This grand opening will take place once construction of the outstanding items listed above is complete. Please monitor your emails leading into the spring for this update.

As mentioned, the decision to open an exercise-focused facility this month was made with StFX students in mind, and we look forward to giving you the opportunity to experience the new space. An email will be sent out the week of January 15th with information on operational hours and how students can access the facility.

Thank you for your continued patience as we work to complete the renovation of the Saputo Centre. Please contact us if you have any questions about the delay, the new schedule or anything else relating to the project.
