William (Bill) Kiely (Class of 1967) has been involved with the
StFX Department of Athletics in varying capacities as a builder and
ardent supporter for the past fifty years. His involvement has
spanned the areas of publicity, marketing, game announcing, sports
writing and general advocacy for StFX Athletics. Bill started out
in 1958 volunteering in the StFX press box, and in 1965 he took the
microphone himself as the color commentator for X-Men football
games. Within a few years he became the play-by-play announcer
broadcasting all home and away X-Men games on CJFX radio, a
position he held for18 years though to 1983. Subsequent to that,
Bill has been the game day voice of X-Men football at Oland Stadium
from 1984 through to the present season. He also supplied his
talents announcing at the Atlantic and Uteck Bowls in Halifax and
sporadically through the 1960’s and 70’s at some X-Men
basketball games.
Bill has lent his voice to the StFX sports of rugby, cross
country, volleyball and soccer over the years in addition to
serving on numerous committees. He has been involved with Father
George Kehoe Endowment Fund events, served on the President’s
Advisory Committee on Athletics, chaired the Father Kehoe Golf
Classic Committee, and served as the President of the national StFX
Alumni Association. An advocate for StFX varsity athletics, Bill
has been a loyal and steadfast supporter of StFX and his
contributions as a builder to the Department of Athletics over the
past fifty years are immeasurable.
