Antigonish, NS—StFX Athletics proudly welcomed four new athletes, one builder and three teams into the Sports Hall of Fame in an induction ceremony and dinner that took place Thursday, October 9th at the Charles V. Keating Centre.
Inducted as athletes were Bill McInytre (football), Susan MacDonald (field hockey), Trevor Reddick (soccer) and Patricia White (soccer), while Bernie Chisholm (cross country, track & field) was honored as a builder. The 1950-51 X-Men hockey team and back-to-back CIS national champion X-Men basketball teams from 1999-00 and 2000-01 were inducted into the team category.
The inductees were welcomed into the Sports Hall of Fame by StFX University President Dr. Kent MacDonald and Director of Athletics & Recreation Mr. Leo MacPherson. Guests at the event were entertained by a performance from Canadian recording artist JRDN (Jordan Croucher), also honored as inductee with the 1999-00 and 2000-01 X-Men basketball teams.
The official citations for all the 2014 inductees are as
follows.
Bill McIntyre (Football, Class of 1987)
Bill McIntyre, an exceptional receiver with the
X-Men football team played for five seasons from 1983 to 1987. As a
three-time team captain, Bill was an outstanding offensive threat
who established conference records for receptions and all-time
yardage that held for a decade after he graduated. Bill’s
athletic prowess still shines in the AUS record book as he ranks
third overall in career receiving yards (2362) and fourth overall
in career receptions (163). Bill was recognized as an AUAA all-star
four times, was a CIAU second team All-Canadian, and he was a
member of the 1983 StFX squad that won the AUAA championship
title.
Susan MacDonald (Field Hockey, Class of 1988)
Susan ‘Sue’ MacDonald (nee
MacEachern), a dominant force on the field hockey pitch,
played four seasons from 1984 to 1987 with the X-Women. An
outstanding student-athlete in the Bachelor of Physical Education
program, Sue was recognized as the StFX female athlete of the year
in 1988. A team captain with the field hockey X-Women, Sue was also
acknowledged as a CIAU All-Canadian in 1988. Further accolades
include recognition as an AUAA all-star for two years, and
participation in the 1985 Canada Games.
Trevor Reddick (Soccer, Class of 1994)
Trevor Reddick was an exceptionally powerful
fullback who controlled the backfield for five seasons with
the X-Men soccer team from 1990 to 1994. A well-decorated student
athlete, Trevor was captain and X-Men most valuable player for
three seasons and the StFX male athlete of the year in 1994. He was
a key contributor to the X-Men teams that won AUAA championships in
1993 and 1994. Trevor was also recognized with numerous AUAA and
CIAU individual awards including AUAA all-star distinction in four
seasons he competed, 1993 CIAU tournament all-star and 1994 CIAU
first team All-Canadian and. Trevor was a two-sport student-athlete
also competing in varsity wrestling as a top contender in the
Atlantic conference.
Patricia White (Soccer, Class of 1997)
Patricia ‘Trish’ White (nee MacDougall)
was an outstanding athlete and leader with the X-Women soccer
team for five seasons from 1993 to 1997. She was first recognized
with the 1993 AUAA rookie of the year award, then acknowledged as
an AUAA all-star three times, and named the 1996 AUAA most valuable
player. She twice received CIAU All-Canadian status. Trish, a
phenomenal force as midfielder, was captain of the X-Women team for
two seasons. This two-time X-Women soccer most valuable player also
lent her talents to the X-Women hockey club during her time as an
athlete at StFX.
Bernie Chisholm (Cross Country, Track & Field,
Class of 1973 & 1974)
For 28 years, Bernie has been the head coach of the
X-Women and X-Men cross country teams elevating the program
from club to varsity status. These cross country teams won 14 AUS
banners including eight titles for the women and six for the men.
Eight individual runners won 11 AUS titles, including two-time
Olympian and 2003 CIS individual champion Eric Gillis. Bernie
guided the X-Women cross country team to a 2007 CIS bronze medal, a
men’s CIS silver medal in 2008 and bronze for the men in
2010. Bernie coached and developed numerous StFX runners who have
gone on to achieve national and international success. Bernie has
also coached the StFX track and field team for more than 10 years,
building the X-Women and X-Men programs into AUS contenders, as
evidenced by the first X-Men’s AUS championship banner in
2014. Since 2004, StFX track athletes accumulated 55 AUS gold
medals, along with numerous silver and bronze medals and six CIS
individual medals. A member of the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame,
Bernie was recognized as the AUS cross country coach of the year on
15 occasions, eight times with the women’s team and seven
times with the men’s. He received the AUS track and field
coach of the year award twice.
1950-1951 X-Men Hockey Team
Considered to be one of the best hockey teams in the
university’s illustrious hockey history, the 1950-51 X-Men
hockey team had an outstanding season. With a record of 37 wins, 11
losses, and 2 ties in 50 games, they scored 317 goals, averaging
over six goals per game. This awesome aggregation had 16 Cape
Bretoners of the 19 total team members. The 1950-51 X-Men began a
dynasty for StFX hockey as they went on to win 14 intercollegiate
championships between 1950 and 1963. In Maritime play, StFX won
nine championships in the 1950s. In 1950-51, the X-Men won the
Maritime Intercollegiate title, became the first university team to
win the Maritime senior title, and also won the A.P.C. senior
hockey league. They went to the semifinals to the Allan Cup, and
were given strong consideration to represent Canada in the 1952
Olympics in Oslo.
It was a memorable year for the X-Men and is now a Hall of Fame honour for the following team members: Phil Bowes, Luigi Centa, Bill Dixon, Howie Gardiner, Steve Hogan, George Kehoe, Duke MacDonald, Paul MacDonald, Joe MacEachern, Jackie MacLellan, Hugh MacMullin, Acky MacSween, John Markie, Ed Murrin, Geno Scattolon, Phil Sharkey, Eddie Swartzack, Eugene Swartzack, Mick Woodford, staff members Jackie McLean and Ray Toomey, and head coach Father Andy Hogan.
1999-2000 X-Men Basketball Team
The 1999-2000 X-Men basketball team won the
program’s second national championship with a memorable 61-60
victory over the Brandon Bobcats in the CIAU championship game at
the Halifax Metro Centre. Led by Randy Nohr, the CIS Tournament
MVP, the X-Men staged a furious rally in the closing minutes of the
final game, scoring the game’s final ten points to pull out
the one point win in dramatic fashion. The team was led by
All-Canadian Fred Perry during the season and finished the year
with a 28-7 overall record, 28-4 versus CIS competition. Along the
way to the national championship, the X-Men finished the AUS
regular season with a 16-4 record, averaging 84.5 points per game.
The blue and white knocked off long-time rival Saint Mary’s
68-62 to win the AUAA conference championship.

2000-01 X-Men Basketball Team
The 2000-2001 X-Men basketball squad had a target on
their backs for the entire season as the defending national
champions. The team handled the pressure with ease going 33-3 over
the year (31-1 in Canada) and capped off the season with a dramatic
83-76 overtime win in the national championship game. Fifth year
senior Dennie Oliver was the player of the game scoring 25 points
and hauling in 12 rebounds in the win over the Brandon Bobcats.
Dennie could have won the game at the end of regulation with two
free throws with no time on the clock and the game tied. However,
he opted to extend the game to overtime! Led by All-Canadians Fred
Perry and Randy Nohr, the 2000-2001 X-Men reeled off an impressive,
and a team record, 29 consecutive victories to end the season and
earn the blue and white their third CIS national championship in
nine years. Over the course of the year, the X-Men dominated their
CIS competition with a 19.7 point average margin of victory.

The StFX Sports Hall of Fame was founded in 1976 and exists to honor those individuals who have contributed significantly to StFX sports as athletes, teams or as builders. Those chosen inductees have exemplified the spirit and ideals of Xaverian athletics in their professional and community lives. Induction ceremonies take place every two years.
