Varouj ‘Vee’ Gurunlian is one of the best student-athletes to ever don the white and blue for the X-Men Basketball team. In 1977, the 6’2” guard brought his dynamic talents to Antigonish where he earned three AUAA all-star selections during his impressive four-year career. He garnered second team status in 1978 and 1979, and was honoured as a first team all-star and second team All-Canadian in 1981. Varouj helped lead the X-Men to the 1981 AUAA conference championship – the first championship of the Coach Konchalski era. He capped off his remarkable career with the distinction of being named the 1981 STFX male athlete of the year. With 2,035 career points, Varouj ended his time at X second on the all-time X-Men Basketball scoring list. He went on to play eight seasons with the Canadian men’s national team, capturing gold at the 1980 Commonwealth Games.
