London, ON - The STFX X-Women Cross Country team ran a spectacular race Sunday, claiming team bronze at the U SPORTS national championship in London, Ont. STFX placed three runners in the top 10, including first team All-Canadians Mairin Canning and Eileen Benoit who came sixth and seventh overall out of the 147 finishers. Teammate Allie Sandluck was tenth overall and garnered second team All-Canadian status.
The bronze medal was only the second team medal at the national level for the X-Women program, They also took home bronze in 2007. Rounding out the STFX placings in the 8km race were Eve Carreau (35th), Caroline Ash (37th), Caden Lee (38th), and Brynn Hebert (86th). A total of 19 teams competed at the championship.
The STFX X-Men finished 11th overall out of 20 teams on the men's side of the championship. Griffin Gamble was the top X-Men in 52nd place and earned U SPORTS All-Rookie status. Luc Gallant and Joal Gallant placed 62nd and 68th, followed by teammates Luke MacDoanld (81st), Liam Patterson (84th), Jack O'Connell (86th) and Andrew Lupenette (141st). A total of 158 runners competed in the 8km event.

UBC Thunderbirds take the double banner at the 2023 U SPORTS Cross Country Championship
London, ON – The UBC Thunderbirds are flying home with both the men's & women's U SPORTS Cross Country Championship trophies and banners after an outstanding performance on Sunday afternoon.
The day started with the Women's 8km race included Katie Newlove winning the race with a final time of 29:06.8. Her teammate Jennifer Erickson finished in 4th place, both receiving First Team All-Canadian status for their performances. Holly MacGillivray & Marley Beckett finished 8th and 11th and Second Team All-Canadian status. UBC's team total score was 38 in the win.
The host Western Mustangs finished in 2nd place with a team total of 71, highlighted by a 3rd place finish from Erika Jordan who ran a race time of 29:24.7.
The podium was rounded out by the StFX X-Women who take home bronze with a total of 95 points.
The individual bronze medal went to Catherine Beauchemin of Laval who ran a final time of 29:18.2.
On the Men's side of the race, the top two individual finishers were Philippe Morneau-Cartier & Jean-Simon Desgagnes who finished 1st and 2nd individually but the Thunderbirds took the team banner with a 52 point team total including a 3rd, 4th & 9th place finishes.
Andrew Davies of UBC was the individual bronze medallist on the national championship squad, running a race total of 24:24.7.
