Melissa Hardy wins SMU/DAL invitational race

The X-Men cross country team won their third consecutive meet of the AUS season this past Saturday in Halifax at the Saint Mary's/Dalhousie Invitational. The X-Women placed second overall, their same result over three races.

The X-Women were led by individual race winner Melissa Hardy who ran the 6k course at Point Pleasant Park in a time of 21:59. Dalhousie's Ellen Chappell and Anna Von Maltzahn were behind her in second and third with times of 22:12 and 22:40, respectively.

The Tigers placed runners in the second through sixth positions en route to the team win, earning 20 points to the X-Women's 45. UNB rounded out the top three with 91 points, while the rest of the field featured Acadia (131), Moncton (145), Memorial (154), St. Thomas (190) and Saint Mary's (217).

Lynette Manual (23:23) and Alexa Zarins (23:44) had top ten finishes for the X-Women in the seventh and tenth positions.

Also competing for StFX were Liz O'Connell (24:29), Kendra MacNeil (24:40) and Ginny Anderson (24:46) who placed 17th, 18th and 19th, along with Alyson Woods (24:58), Kathryn Tuck (25:09) and Beth MacDonald (25:16) close behind in 21st, 22nd and 23rd.

Heidi MacDonald (25:59) and Ellen Burnett (26:54) rounded out the StFX competitors in the field of 72 runners from eight AUS schools.

On the men's side, X-Men sophomore Scott Donald was the top finisher in third place, completing the 8k course in a time of 25:48.

Saint Mary's John Kuto won his third consecutive race at 25:23 and Dalhousie's Matt MacNeil was second at 25:24.

Following Donald were StFX teammates Riley Johnston (25:56) and Lee Wesselius (26:11) in fourth and fifth positions.

A trio of X-Men in Bryden Tate (26:42), Alex Neuffer (26:53) and Gabe Quenneville (26:58) placed 10th, 11th and 12th to help the X-Men earn the team title with 33 points.

Dalhousie was second with 40 points, followed by Memorial (110) in third. Rounding out the field were UNB (112), Saint Mary's (129), Moncton (132) and St. Thomas (169).

Also racing for the X-Men in Halifax were Calvin DeWolfe (27:18) in 16th, Ryan Hatchard (27:39) in 19th, Brandon MacDonald (28:26) in 22nd, followed by Matt Eliot (29:08) and
Warren Ferguson (29:11) in 27th and 28th. Ryan O'Regan (29:51) rounded out the StFX field amongst a total 67 runners.

Next on the schedule for the X-Women and X-Men is an interlock meet on Saturday, October 12th at the University of Montreal.
