Tigers spoil X-Women's home opener

The Dalhousie Tigers spoiled the home opener for the StFX X-Women in AUS soccer action.

The defending conference champions edged the blue and white 2-1 Friday evening at Oland Stadium in Antigonish.

Joanna Blodgett tallied the game winner on a penalty kick in the 80th minute, beating X-Women keeper Maris Miller on a low shot to the corner.

Off an X-Women own goal, the Tigers opened the scoring in the 33rd minute.

A cross by the visitors sailed through the hands of a soaring Miller, deflecting in off defender Victoria Penner.

Penner bounced back less than one minute later when she helped set up the tying goal by third-year midfielder Sarah Cannell, who deposited a left-footed strike behind Tigers’ keeper Taryn McKenna.

Cannell earned player of the game honor for StFX while Blodgett was the Subway player of the game for the Tigers.

With the loss, the X-Women drop to 0-2 in early regular season action. The Tigers handed them a 3-0 loss one week ago in Halifax. The Tigers improve to 2-0-1.

The blue and white will return to action Sunday afternoon when they visit the Saint Mary’s Huskies (0-1-1) in Halifax. Game time is 1 p.m.
