Fredericton, NB - STFX forward Ireland McCloskey scored the game-winning goal as STFX defeated the STU Tommies 3-2 in an overtime thriller.

"We fell short at the end, was not the win that we wanted, but we got a point out of it," Jacey Dane of the Tommies commented.

The first period was evenly matched, with STFX showing a bit more aggression. Vivian Hinch, assisted by Ashlyn Garnett, broke the deadlock at min 14:00, putting STFX ahead 1-0 in what would stand as the only first period goal.

St. Thomas responded in the second period at the 7:22 minute mark, as Jacey Dane netted an unassisted goal to tie the game. STFX quickly regained the lead, however, with a goal at 15:47 scored by Maggy Burbidge and assisted by Ella VandeSompel. The X-Women held onto the 2-1 lead through 40 minutes.

In the third period, the Tommies pressed hard to equalize, and with just 50 seconds left in the game Nadia Lavoie found the back of the net, sending the game into overtime.

The overtime period was short, as STFX secured the win in the first 20 seconds with McCloskey's unassisted goal, dealing a blow to the Tommies efforts.

"We ended up winning the series against X, so we count that as a plus," Dane noted.

The players of the game were awarded to McCloskey and St. Thomas' Katie Sweeney.

The Tommies will play tomorrow at home against Dalhousie, while STFX next sees action against Saint Mary's on Tuesday in a game re-scheduled from November 12th.
