CIS TOP TEN TUESDAY (#17)
Windsor, Calgary new national leaders

OTTAWA (CIS) – There are three changes atop CIS national rankings this week. The University of Windsor Lancers move up to No. 1 in women’s basketball and men’s track and field, while the University of Calgary Dinos are the new leaders in women’s athletics.

In other CIS sports, Carleton (men’s basketball), McGill (women’s hockey), Alberta (men’s hockey, men’s volleyball & men’s wrestling), UBC (women’s swimming & women’s volleyball), Toronto (men’s swimming) and Brock (women’s wrestling) all maintain their No. 1 status.

Women’s basketball

The reigning two-time CIS champion Lancers move up two spots in the ninth coaches’ poll of the season after they improved to 13-0 in conference play thanks to road wins over McMaster (6-7), 56-48, and Guelph (4-9), 68-53. Windsor had topped the first six polls of the campaign before dropping to third place behind Fraser Valley and Regina two weeks ago. The national champs will look to resume their winning ways when they host McMaster on Wednesday and visit Waterloo (0-13) on Saturday.

Rounding out the leading quintet in the new Top 10 are the undefeated Saint Mary’s Huskies (11-0), who move up two positions to a season-high No. 2; Regina Cougars (12-2), down one spot to No. 3; Fraser Valley Cascades (11-3), down three to No. 4; and Carleton Ravens (10-3), up one to No. 5.

Fraser Valley’s reign atop the national rankings came to an abrupt end after only two weeks. After winning 11 of their first 12 league contests, the Cascades dropped their two road games in Alberta last weekend, 79-69 in overtime to No. 10 Calgary (12-2) and 64-59 to Lethbridge (6-8).

Men’s basketball

Carleton (12-1) crushed visiting Queen’s (9-5) 104-63 on Saturday in its lone outing of the past week. The reigning CIS champs play three more home games this week, first on Wednesday night against No. 8 Ottawa (11-2) in the annual Capital Hoops Classic at Scotiabank Place, and then versus York (5-8) and Laurentian (7-6) this weekend at the Ravens’ Nest.

Women’s hockey

McGill (13-0-0) went 2-for-2 at home this past weekend, including a hard-fought 4-3 win over No. 4 Montreal (12-3-0) and a lopsided 6-1 decision against Ottawa (3-8-3). The undefeated Martlets hit the road later this week to battle Ottawa on Friday and Carleton (5-7-1) on Saturday.

Men’s hockey

Alberta (18-4-0) showed no mercy against visiting Lethbridge (1-19-2) last weekend, sweeping the struggling Pronghorns 4-1 and 9-1 in Edmonton. The Golden Bears face another provincial rival this week as they visit No. 10 Calgary (14-8-0) on Friday before returning home to host the Dinos the following night.

Women’s volleyball

UBC (15-1) scored a pair of straight-set decisions against winless Thompson Rivers (0-16) in Kamloops. The reigning six-time CIS champion Thunderbirds should face a stiffer test this weekend when they host No. 8 UBC Okanagan (11-5) for a Friday-Saturday doubleheader.

Men’s volleyball

Alberta (16-0) was up to the challenge in Brandon against the No. 6 Bobcats (10-6), winning both duels by identical 3-1 scores. The undefeated Bears host No. 9 Winnipeg (8-8) on Friday and Saturday.
