Hockey X-Women upend Tommies 3-1

The CIS No. 4 ranked StFX X-Women defeated the St. Thomas Tommies 3-1 Saturday afternoon in Antigonish, NS, picking up their second win of the weekend. Janelle Parent continued her stellar season, collecting one goal and one assist in the StFX victory.

The X-Women opened the scoring early in the first period when CIS leading scorer Alex Normore finished off a nice passing play from Janelle Parent at the 3:58 mark. Veteran forward Leah Boucher then gave the X-Women a comfortable 2-0 lead when she was able to squeak one past Tommies goaltender Julia Sharun at the 18:26 mark off a nice feed from X-Women defenseman Jessica McCullough. The shots were tied 9-9 after one period of play as the X-Women took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

The second period saw both teams capitalize on the power play. St. Thomas made it a one goal game when Danielle Miller scored at the 13:54 off feeds from Katie Brewster and Kayla Blackmore. The X-Women were able to score some much needed insurance when Parent responded less than a minute later after she scored on the power play. Jenna Pitts and Suzanne Fenerty picked up assists on the play.

The third period was back and forth but both goaltenders were up to the task as they turned away all rubber that came their way. St. Thomas outshot the X-Women by a slight 9-8 margin in the third period. The final shots in the game were 33-26 for St. Thomas as Katie Greenway played a solid game in nets for the blue and white to hang onto the victory. Her 32 saves in nets for the X-Women earned her Subway Player of the Game honors. Sharun stopped 23 shots for the Tommies.

The AUS first place X-Women improved their record to 19-4-0 as they sit a comfortable five points ahead of second place Moncton with 38 total points. They finish off the regular season with a matinee game on the road next Saturday, February 25th when StFX visits the fourth place UPEI Panthers (12-10-0) in Charlottetown. The Subway AUS Championship is slated for March 1-4 at Dalhousie University.
