X-Women handle Huskies with 6-1 win

The StFX X-Women beat the Saint Mary’s Huskies for the fourth consecutive time this season on Friday night, this time winning 6-1 in Halifax. CIS scoring leader Alex Normore collected three goals and one assist in the X-Women victory.

The X-Women started the game very strong, opening the scoring only 2:34 into the first frame when Alex Normore potted her 21st of the season off passes from Janelle Parent and Megan Innes. The Huskies were able to respond less than a minute later however, as Leah MacLennan tied the game at 1-1 at the 3:19 mark. Taylor Williamson had the lone assist on the play.

The scoring frenzy in the first ten minutes continued as the X-Women were able to get back-to-back goals from Aby Laking (unassisted) at the 4:11 mark and Erin Brophy (Laking, Innes) on the power play at 8:25. The scoring slowed down for the rest of the period as X-Women goaltender Kristy Garrow and Huskies goalkeeper Mallory Sanford were able to turn aside all remaining shots and head into the first intermission with the score 3-1 in favor of StFX.

Sanford stood tall in nets for the Huskies for most of the second period. The X-Women scored again with less than three minutes to play in the period. Brittney Perkins (Normore, Parent) scored at the 17:30 mark, then assisted on Normore’s second goal of the game just thirty seconds later, building the StFX lead to 5-1 heading into the third period. The X-Women outshot the Huskies 30-18 after two periods of play.

The third period was quiet for the first fourteen minutes or so until Normore was able to complete her hat trick at the 14:06 mark off feeds from Parent and Suzanne Fenerty. The final six minutes played out with no scoring to report as the X-Women prevailed for the 6-1 victory.

StFX outshot Saint Mary’s by a 40-27 margin in the game. Garrow padded her stats, making 26 saves on 27 shots for the X-Women, while Sanford made 34 saves for the host Huskies. Normore was named Subway Player of the Game for her three goal, one assist effort.

Next on the schedule for the first place X-Women (17-4-0) are two home games next weekend, February 17th and 18th. Friday night, StFX will host second place Moncton (16-2-1), followed by a Saturday night game against fifth place St. Thomas (9-9-1). Puck drops at 7:00 pm both evenings in Antigonish.
