'Parental' control paces X-Women to wins over Halifax foes

X-Women forward Janelle Parent had an impressive weekend for the CIS ranked No. 4 StFX X-Women as she tallied seven goals and two assists in wins over Saint Mary’s and Dalhousie. Saturday afternoon StFX handled the SMU Huskies 8-0, while Friday night in Halifax they picked up a 4-3 win over the DAL Tigers.

In Saturday’s win, StFX controlled the tempo of the game from start to finish as they handed the Saint Mary’s Huskies a lopsided 8-0 loss at the Keating Centre in Antigonish, NS. Janelle Parent anchored the offense as she found the back of the net five times and also collected an assist.

The X-Women came out flying, jumping all over the Huskies defense. The first period however, belonged to Janelle Parent as she capitalized four straight times. Parent started her onslaught on the power play at the 2:40 mark as she went top corner on a great rush down the left wing side, taking a Suzanne Fenerty pass.  Parent then scored on a nice tip in front at the 5:23 mark, from Brittney Perkins and Alex Normore.

Parent continued to click with her linemates as she scored her natural hat trick goal at the 11:24 mark as Normore picked up an assist. The Ponoka, AB native then capped off her brilliant first period, scoring her fourth of the game at 17:03 while on the power play to put the X-Women up comfortably. Jenna Pitts and Perkins assisted on Parent’s fourth goal. Normore rounded out the first period scoring at the 19:10 mark to give the X-Women a 5-0 lead after 20 minutes of play. Rebecca Traversa assisted on Normore’s goal.

Saint Mary’s settled down in the second period and the scoring came to a halt as both teams battled exceptionally hard and both goaltenders were making timely saves.  The second period closed with both teams unable to find the back of the net, and the score remained 5-0 after two periods of play.

The scoring picked right back up in the third period as Parent continued her career night, scoring a nice goal on a penalty shot at the 2:45 mark. Her five-goal effort ties an AUS record for the second most goals in a single game.

The X-Women completely put the game away when they received goals from Normore (Parent), her second of the game, and Molly MacDonald from  Nicole Hansom and Aby Laking at the 8:50 and 14:35 marks, respectively. Normore scored a shorthanded marker while MacDonald’s came on the power play as the X-Women rode off into the sunset with an 8-0 victory over the last place Huskies.

StFX outshot Saint Mary’s 46-18.  StFX goaltender Kristy Garrow made 18 saves for the shutout victory, while, Erin Doerrsam and Mallory Sanford combined to stop 38 shots in the Huskies crease. Janelle Parent rightfully received Subway Player of the Game honors for collecting five goals and one assist.

In Friday’s 4-3 win over Dalhousie, Parent again played well for the X-Women, picking up two goals and an assist in her nine-point weekend. Her linemate Alex Normore, one of the leading scorers in the conference, scored StFX’s other two goals and also assisted on Parent’s two markers to help pace the blue and white.

The first period saw the Tigers open the scoring as Fielding Montgomery scored at the 5:15 mark of the first period. Parent (Normore, Perkins) was able to get the blue and white on the board at the 12:18 mark, evening the game up at 1-1 heading into the first intermission.

Normore then scored two consecutive power play goals ten minutes apart to break the game open for the X-Women in the second period, taking a commanding 3-1 lead. Her first tally came at 1:14 from Perkins and Traversa, while Fenerty and Parent assisted on the second power play marker at 11:55.

The two teams then traded goals as the Tigers made the score 3-2 on a goal from Miranda McMillan (13:10) and StFX got one from Parent (Normore) at the 18:17 mark to send the score to 4-2 in favor of the X-Women after two periods of play.

Dalhousie clawed their way back into the game when Miranda MacMillan scored her second goal of the game for the Tigers while on the power play at the 16:20 mark.  This would be the last goal of the game however, as the X-Women hung on for the 4-3 win.

StFX outshot Dalhousie 32-24 as Katie Greenway made 21 saves in goal for the X-Women, picking up the victory. Brittany McMacken took the loss, making 28 saves for the hometown Tigers. Alex Normore was named Subway Player of the Game for her four point effort.

The X-Women (13-2-0) will travel to New Brunswick to take on the St. Thomas Tommies (5-7-1) next Saturday, January 21st, followed by a Sunday afternoon game against Moncton (11-1-1).
