Campbell fires hat trick in X-Women win

The CIS ranked No. 6 X-Women added two more W’s to their win column this weekend with a 6-2 win over UPEI and a 4-1 win over Saint Mary’s.

On Saturday afternoon at home the X-Women outshot the Panthers 43-19 and scored five power play goals, including a hat trick from Player of the Game Carolyn Campbell.

\r\n

Campbell opened the scoring with her first power play marker 5:26 into the game. Jenelle MacKenzie evened the score at 1-1 before the period was over, however, the X-Women would score five unanswered goals. Abygail Laking, Carolyn Campbell and Laura Grant all scored second period goals to establish a 4-1 lead after 40 minutes of play.

Campbell fired her third goal of the game, all on the power play, at 8:55 into the third period and Sidney Ritchie rounded out the scoring for X. Amber Gaudette notched the other Panthers goal.

Jenna Downey, Suzanne Fenerty and Jessica Shanahan each had two assists and piece for the X-Women. Katie Greenway earned the win in nets with 17 saves. Kristy Dobson took the loss for the Panthers, who were outshot by StFX 43-19.

On Sunday afternoon in Halifax, the X-Women continued their winning ways with a 4-1 victory over Saint Mary’s.

\r\n

Abygail Laking gave the X-Women with an early lead as she scored 1:13 into the first period. Jessica Shanahan assisted on the play. StFX increased their lead to 2-0 with a power play goal off the stick of Brittney Perkins (Catie Gavin, Carolyn Campbell) at the 10:35 minute mark.

Saint Mary’s closed the gap before the period was over as Sarah Maynard scored with just under a minute left on the clock. The one goal was all the Huskies would manage against veteran X netminder Katie Harvieux as she had 23 saves to hold on for the StFX win.

Leah Boucher (Daniela Falconia) scored a third period power play goal for the X-Women and Nicole Hansom (Carolyn Campbell, Suzanne Fenerty) rounded out the scoring in the three goal margin of victory.

\r\n

Jillian Robinson took the loss in nets for the Huskies who kept pace with the X-Women in the shot department, holding the slight edge at 24-23.

\r\n

The X-Women remain atop the AUS conference with a 12-2-2 record and 26 points, three ahead of second place Moncton. They lead the conference in virtually every team stat, including goals scored (61), assists (97), shots (604), power play goals (25), power play percentage (.325) and penalty killing percentage (.930).

\r\n

Next on the schedule is a tough road trip face the third place St. Thomas Tommies (8-5-2) in Fredericton on Saturday, Jan. 23rd, followed by an afternoon match Sunday in Moncton (11-2-1) against the CIS ranked No. 5 Aigles Bleues.
