Ferguson MVP, Synishin top coach

2007-08 Women's Hockey Major Awards Announced

February 21, 2008 (HALIFAX, NS) - Atlantic University Sport is pleased to announce the 2007-08 women's hockey major award winners as selected by the conference's head coaches.\r\n
The 2007-08 Atlantic University Sport Most Valuable Player is forward Brayden Ferguson of the #4-ranked StFX X-Women. Ferguson, a fourth year Arts student from Toronto, ON, is the StFX team captain and scored a league-leading 25 goals, 25 assists and 50 points this season for the X-Women. Her 50 points also led the CIS and make her just the third player in conference history to reach the 50-point plateau and first player to reach it twice in her career. She also led the league game-winning goals with six, and tied for the lead in short-handed goals (2) and hat-tricks (2). Brayden, an AUS all-star in all four of her years with the X-Women program, is the first StFX player to be selected as the Atlantic conference MVP and will serve as the nominee for the CIS Player of the Year award next month in Ottawa. No Atlantic University Sport player has ever been named the CIS women's hockey Player of the Year.

The Atlantic conference Rookie of the Year is Dalhousie Tigers forward Jocelyn LeBlanc. In just her first year with the Dalhousie program, Jocelyn, a native of Moncton, NB, led the Tigers in goals (21) points (32) game-winning goals (5) and power-play goals (6). She also had one short-handed marker and a hat-trick. She is the first Dalhousie player ever to be named the AUS Rookie of the Year and will look to become the third Atlantic conference player to be selected as the CIS Rookie of the Year.

David Synishin of the StFX X-Women has been selected by his peers as the 2007-08 Coach of the Year. Synishin guided the #4-ranked X-Women to a perfect 21-0-0 regular season record this year, becoming just the third team in conference history to go undefeated. The 21 victories and 10 shutouts this season are both new Atlantic University Sport records. His X-Women scored a league-leading 126 goals and allowed just 18, the fewest of any team. In his six years as head coach, David has compiled an impressive career regular season record of 96-8-4. This is the third time Synishin has been named Coach of the Year.
