Ice X-Women move to 10-0

Dec 19, 2007 - The CIS nationally ranked 5th place X-Women hockey team finished the first half of the season with a perfect 10-0-0 record and currently sit atop the AUS conference with 20 points, three better than second place Saint Mary‰Ûªs. The X-Women have scored 65 goals to date, have allowed only 10 goals in 10 games and have recorded five shutouts. They lead the AUS in numerous statistical categories, including goals scored, assists, shots, shorthanded goals, penalty killing percentage and shot percentage.\r\n\r\nStFX is led this year by veteran fourth year forward Brayden Ferguson (Toronto, ON) who is currently second overall in CIS scoring and first in AUS scoring with 26 points (15 goals, 11 assists). She‰Ûªs tied with Jennifer Newton of Alberta for the most goals scored in the country and has already recorded two hat tricks this season. An AUS all-rookie last season, second year center Jessica Shanahan (Calgary, AB) is third in the AUS scoring race and 7th in the CIS with 19 points (8 goals, 11 assists). First year winger Catie Gavin (Antigonish, NS) is currently 7th in AUS scoring with 16 points and is in the top 20 in CIS scoring. Forward Christina Davis, last year‰Ûªs CIS second team all-Canadian defenseman Marilynn Hay and forward Kelly Boudreau round out the top ten AUS scoring list. Both Davis and Hay have 15 points while Boudreau has 12.\r\n\r\nTaking care of the netminding to date has been the platoon team of Crystal Stewart (4th year, Whitehorse, YK) and Katie Harvieux (3rd year, Digby, NS) both sporting perfect 5-0 records. Stewart is currently second in CIS goaltenders with a 0.60 GGA and three shutouts, while Harvieux is fifth in the CIS with a 1.00 GGA and two shutouts.\r\n\r\nThe X-Women have consistently been ranked in the CIS Top Ten every week to date of the 2007-08 season, fluctuating between fourth and fifth. In eight exhibition games to date, the X-Women are 7-1, losing only to the nationally ranked number one McGill Martlets. They earned out-of conference victories over Concordia and Ottawa. Led by sixth year head coach David Synishin, the X-Women hope to return to the national championship after missing out on that chance last season. Their best result at the national stage came in 2006 with a fourth place performance. The X-Women resume AUS regular season play Jan. 5th with a game against the Dalhousie Tigers and will host conference rival Saint Mary‰Ûªs on Jan. 6th.
