X-Women win 2, drop 1 versus Q teams

Nov 19, 2007 - The hockey X-Women won two and lost one this past weekend in exhibition play against QSSF opponents. Friday night StFX hosted the CIS ranked number one McGill Martlets and fell victim to a 4-0 loss at the hands of the top squad. The X-Women got into penalty trouble early in the first period and the Martlets capitalized scoring three power play goals and establishing a 3-0 lead after one period, making it difficult for the X-Women to mount a comeback. Shauna Denis, Anne-Sophie Bettez and Vanessa Davidson scored the McGill goals, with Cathy Chartrand scoring a shorthanded marker in the second period add to the lead. Charline LaBonte earned the win in nets for the Martlets who outshot the X-Women 32-16 in the game, while Katie Harvieux took the loss for X.\r\n\r\nOn Saturday afternoon the X-Women played a close game with the visiting Concordia Stingers and earned an exciting 2-1 shoot-out win. Christina David opened the scoring in the game with a first period goal only two minutes into the game. Both teams remained off the scoresheet for the remainder of the first period, all throughout the second and most of the third period until Tawnya Danis evened the game with a goal at 16:31 for the Stingers. The teams remained deadlocked after a five minute overtime period and after three shooters a side in the shoot-out as Catie Gavin and Catherine Desjardins exchanged shoot-out goals. After a Stingers missed goal, Christina Davis capitalized on the opportunity and notched the game winner for the X-Women and her second of the game. Crystal Stewart earned the win in nets for the X-Women who outshot the Stingers 36-17.\r\n\r\nThe X-Women earned their second win of the weekend with a 3-2 win over the Ottawa Gee Gees on Sunday afternoon. The goal scoring went back and forth throughout the game and the shots were fairly even with the X-Women getting the edge 24-21. Brayden Ferguson opened the scoring for StFX with a late first period goal, then the Gee Gee's and X-Women exchanged goals in the second period, giving X a 2-1 lead after two. Mandi Duhamel scored for Ottawa while Catie Gavin scored the X marker. Duhamel scored her second of the game to even things at 2-2 just three and a half minutes into the third period. The X-Women were able to convert a power play goal just a minute later as Kelly Boudreau scored the game winner with assists going to Gavin and Sheila Kelly. Katie Harvieux earned the win in nets for StFX while the Gee Gee netminding duties were split between Jessika Audet and Melissa Dipetta.\r\n\r\nThe X-Women resume AUS regular season play this weekend with a couple of home games. Saturday afternoon at 3:00 pm the UNB Varsity Reds will provide the opposition while the UdeM Aigles Bleues will be at the Keating Centre Sunday afternoon for a 2:00 pm game.
