Tyrone Watson to take over as interim head coach of STFX women’s basketball team

ANTIGONISH, NS – STFX Director of Athletics & Recreation Leo MacPherson has announced that Tyrone Watson will take over as interim head coach of the X-Women Basketball program effective immediately. Watson is currently an assistant coach with both the X-Women and X-Men Basketball programs.

"I am very pleased to have Tyrone Watson assume the role as interim head coach," comments MacPherson. "He has earned the respect from our X-Women basketball student-athletes and I am confident Tyrone will do a great job guiding our program during the second half of our season."

Coach Watson was an assistant with the X-Men team last season and this year has assisted with both basketball squads. He also serves as an assistant coach with the Niagara Riverlions of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) in the university off-season.

Watson played professional basketball for seven years both internationally and domestically and was a former junior men's Canadian national team player in 2008 and played his collegiate basketball with New Mexico State University from 2008 to 2013.

The native of Hamilton, Ont. notes, "I am incredibly humbled and honoured to be named interim head coach of the X-Women Basketball program. I look forward to the challenge of preparing the team to qualify for playoffs and compete in the AUS championship tournament. My top priority is developing these young women into high performance student-athletes on and off the court and within our community."

Watson will be in place on an interim basis for the conclusion of the 2021-22 varsity season. STFX Athletics will post the head coaching position in late January, 2022.
