Acadia defeat X-Women at home
The X-Women basketball team suffered a 75-63 loss to the visiting Acadia Axewomen in AUS action Thursday night at the StFX Oland Centre. The Axewomen outscored the blue and white 22-12 in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

After establishing a 21-18 lead after the first quarter, the Axewomen opened it up to a 38-29 lead at halftime. The X-Women fought back with a strong third quarter, outscoring their opponents 22-15 to pull to within two points (53-51) after 30 minutes of play. The defending AUS champions went on an 18-0 run to open the fourth quarter, running away with the game.

Kristy More scored 23 points and added seven rebounds and five steals for Acadia, while Subway player of the game Lindsay Harris netted 21 points and had eight boards. Abbey Duinker scored 15 points and had nine rebounds in the win.
Lia St. Pierre led the X-Women with 17 points, nine rebounds, five assists and five steals. Vanessa Pickard scored 13 and added 7 rebounds and two assists. Jocelyn Moore scored nine points, all from three-point range.

The Axewomen (39.1%) outshot the X-Women (32.1%) from field goal range and were 72.4% from the free throw line (21-29), compared to the X-Women’s 40.0% (4-10) as Acadia recorded only 10 total team fouls in the game. The X-Women had 21.

The game marked the annual ‘Shoot for the Cure’ fundraising initiative for breast cancer research. The X-Women and their supporters were able to raise $700 for the cause as the teams played with a specialty pink basketball.

The Acadia win earned them four points in the standings as they improve to 11-4 on the season and move into sole possession of second place in the AUS standings. The X-Women fall to 8-7 and reamin in a third place tie with Dalhousie (9-7).

StFX will face the Tigers in Halifax on Saturday night, Feb. 12th. Game time at the Dalplex is 6:00 pm. Acadia will be off until Tuesday, Feb. 12th when they face the AUS league leading and undefeated Saint Mary’s Huskies (16-0). The CIS ranked No. 2 Huskies will travel to Wolfville for a 6:00 pm game.
